Perform a variety of skills and specialized services for animals and animal colonies, ensuring proper care and maintenance. This role involves observing and evaluating animals, administering drugs under veterinary oversight, maintaining records, and providing husbandry services.
Responsibilities
+ Observe and evaluate animals for signs of illness, stress, and deviations in conditions.
+ Perform animal care tasks, including drug administration, sample collection, and pre- and post-procedural care.
+ Maintain records of treatments in accordance with institutional, local, and federal regulatory standards.
+ Provide husbandry and specialized services for animals in animal colonies.
+ Maintain, sanitize, and decontaminate animal rooms and facilities within low to moderate hazardous areas, e.g., BL2.
+ Serve as a source of information to investigators and support staff on animal handling, restraint, and pre- and post-procedural care or sanitation services.
+ Train and instruct staff on sanitation, animal handling, restraint, and care techniques.
+ Perform periodic decontamination, maintenance, and rotation of equipment in facility washing centers.
+ Operate animal care processing equipment, diagnose mechanical and technical problems.
+ Maintain inventory of supplies.
+ May act as a driver to pick up and deliver animals and materials, applying proper animal handling and care protocols.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Four years of work experience, two of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school level education; or two years of related work experience and an Associate’s Degree, or an equivalent combination of experience and education
+ Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (preferred)
+ Ability to lift 50 pounds
+ Good manual dexterity
Work Environment
The role includes a 12-week training/probation period, coinciding with a 90-day probation period. Training staff will ensure proper training for the position through constructive communication and transparent documentation of progress. The work schedule during training/probation is Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Once off training, the schedule is Friday to Tuesday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM or 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Staff receive a 10% shift differential increase for working Saturdays and Sundays. All staff are required to work appointed holidays and recess days, with specific pay structures for these periods. Staff are considered essential personnel and must maintain a good attendance record, reporting to work on time even during inclement weather. Personal protective equipment (PPE) includes gloves and gown. Parking fees are required for all staff.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $27.06 - $29.77/hr.
