What we want Texas A&M's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is seeking a dedicated Animal Caretaker I to provide routine care for animals and related facilities within the Large Animal Hospital. What you need to know Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to the selected hire’s experience. Schedule: This schedule for this position is Friday through Tuesday, 7:00AM to 3:30PM. Weekends are required for this shift. Please Note: Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor. Minimum Qualifications + High School diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience​ ​* The well-qualified candidate will also possess 1 year of experience in handling and caring for large animals, including but not limited to horses, cattle, sheep, and goats. They will have demonstrated large animal handling and/or husbandry experience, along with knowledge of different kinds of patient feeds. Additionally, they will be proficient in the usage and knowledge of various types of disinfectants, understand PPE protocols for different hospital wards, and be aware of biosecurity measures. Some of the Responsibilities include: + Patient Care: Checks inventory of feed, cleaning supplies, buckets, and bowls. Cleans beds and stalls with unrestrained patients in them. Brushes, bathes and exercises animals as directed. Handles and restrains animals as needed. Maintains barn, feed room, and shavings room cleanliness. Assists in feeding and watering patients. Assists veterinary technicians as needed. Observes and reports concerns with patients in the wards. Cleans and disinfects treatment rooms, windows, ceilings, and cabinets. Transports animals and supplies. Operates a forklift and university vehicles. Empties manure cans and trash receptacles daily (scrubbing and disinfecting). Turns out TAMU owned animals to their paddocks. + General/Universal Job Duties: Communicates regularly with other services in the hospital and team members. Provides safe patient handling and husbandry. Reads and responds appropriately to animal behavior (aggressive, frightened). Places pharmacy orders for restocking needs. Maintains care and service of equipment. + Teaching and Clinical Research: Helps DVM students and student workers understand the disinfecting protocols of each hospital ward. + Required Training, Compliance, And Administrative: Remains current with various TAMU and department specific procedures and completes training courses.
