**FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT**
Research faculty engage in, are responsible for, manage, and/or execute significant areas of research or scholarship. They may serve as principal or co-principal investigators on grants or contracts, manage postdoctoral fellows and their research projects or supervise graduate or undergraduate student research. Research Faculty hold full-time, non-tenure track positions. While they may participate in instructional programs, such as lectures or demonstrations, they are not assigned regular teaching duties.

Reporting to the ASRC's Executive Director, the Animal Facility Core Director will lead the development and implementation of policies and procedures which ensure compliance with all US Federal regulations, State law and University policies governing the care and use of animals in the ASRC’s Comparative Medicine Unit. The Core Director will liaise with faculty, researchers, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to ensure the facility development and maintenance is complementary to the support of research requirements. The Core Director will also supervise administrative staff working in the facility. Finally, the Core Facility director will conduct original research either independent.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
**-** Conducts original animal research alone or in collaboration with the Neuroscience and/or Environmental Science initiative.
- Seeks out extramural and intramural funds for their own research projects.
- Publishes scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals with the ASRC affiliation.
- Assists in the development and implementation of policies and SOPs for the facility for animal care, sanitation, environmental monitoring, and animal related research in the facility.
- Directs supervision of the IACUC specialist, animal carers, husbandry staff, veterinary technicians, and/or research assistants reporting to the CMU; oversee their animal care responsibilities; provide, database, and track training; approve timesheets and leave requests; coordinate scheduling; conduct performance evaluations; prepare and submit personnel actions on behalf of the CMU.
- Acts as a liaison and communicates between the CMU, the attending veterinarian, IACUC committee, facilities department, EHSO, researchers, and/or administration, as appropriate, relating to CMU related issues, requirements, updates, and/or activities within the facility.
- Maintains effective communication with faculty, researchers and students to ensure that current requirements are well understood and met, and future requirements are presented and logically implemented.
- Purchases materials and supplies on behalf of the CMU per CUNY and RF-CUNY purchasing requirements; reconciles p-card purchases; prepares and submits purchasing documentation per CUNY or RF-CUNY policy; submits invoices for payment.
- Determines need and participates in the strategic planning of CMU purchases; performs vendor assessments and meets with vendors to review products and negotiate favorable pricing and terms.
- Assists in the design and implementation of staff training programs; Provides training to CMU staff and researchers to ensure each individual working with animals are well trained and proficient in techniques; tracks training records and liaises with Animal Compliance Specialist to ensure records remain up-to-date and meet requirements.
- Monitors and documents physical plant conditions; coordinates repairs, maintenance, and calibration of physical plant and equipment; reviews current trends regarding the application of physical plant regulations; provides reports to relevant stakeholders as needed/requested.
- Performs information management and inventory control such as census uploads, HVAC alarms, temperature/humidity; Prepares reports regarding animal census, equipment calibration and environmental condition for various regulatory oversight groups.
- Remains current on developments regarding changes in regulatory requirements that pertain to vivarium environmental and physical plant conditions and animal research compliance requirements.
- Researches, seeks out, and liaises with prospective future users of the CMU facility; assists with space planning and assignments to accommodate incoming animals and research projects.
• Assists finance office with CMU budget preparations; rate development; invoice preparation and accounts receivable.
• Serves on committees related to animal research and relevant EHSO.
• Supervises and provides assistance to animal research compliance specialist on operational matters.
• Other related duties as assigned.
This position requires the incumbent to work in person.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
Ph.D. in area(s) of expertise or equivalent. Also required are success in carrying out research and ability to advise and/or oversee the direct work of others.
A preferred candidate should have:
- Five (5) years of lab management and 7 years working in an animal facility.
- DVM/VMD degree instead or in addition to Ph.D. degree.
- Proficient in animal handling and other vet tech skills.
- Experienced with writing Standard Operating Protocols in animal care.
- Experience with ordering supplies and conducting business with vendors.
- Experience in overseeing budget.
- Ability to be on-call during select weekends/holidays.
- Experience with animal husbandry duties.
- Published peer-reviewed articles.
- Extramural grant writing and funding success.
**COMPENSATION**
$85,000 - $100,000. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
