The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Director is responsible for the strategic oversight and leadership of APP teams, including Physician Assistants (PAs), Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) across designated service lines. This includes ensuring alignment with organizational goals, optimizing team-based care, and maintaining high standards of clinical practice and operational efficiency. The APP Director will collaborate closely with the VP of APP Services to develop and implement strategic initiatives, assess staffing needs, and drive quality improvement efforts within the assigned service lines.
In addition, the APP Director will oversee regulatory compliance, credentialing, and licensing activities, and ensure that quality metrics and peer review processes are in place. The director will play a key role in human resources functions such as recruitment, retention, and professional development for APPs. They will also supervise and mentor APP managers, fostering a collaborative and effective leadership team. This role involves balancing strategic leadership with direct involvement in clinical practice, ensuring the highest quality of patient care while promoting a positive and engaged work environment for the APP teams.
Essential FunctionsProvide leadership, mentorship, and support to APP managers, ensuring effective team management, onboarding, and orientation.Develop and facilitate educational opportunities for APPs, focusing on regulatory, clinical, and operational topics.Support physicians in optimizing APP roles within the service line, fostering collaborative practice.Act as a subject matter expert, providing guidance to APPs on professional standards, scope of practice, and regulatory compliance.Implement compliance assurance processes for privileges and skills to ensure consistent care delivery.Manage service line operations to ensure consistency, efficiency, and alignment with organizational objectives, including utilization metrics.Balance workforce distribution with clinical needs, ensuring top-of-licensure practice.Coordinate recruitment and oversee orientation programs for newly hired APPs in partnership with APP Managers.Collaborate with the VP of APP Services to develop new APP roles that support Corewell Health East’s strategic objectives.Participate in regional and leadership committees on behalf of the APP team, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities.Monitor outcomes and satisfaction data, developing action plans for performance improvement.Maintain 20% clinical engagement, or as directed by the VP of APP Services.Perform additional duties as assigned to support the service line and Corewell Health East.Supervision Received: The APP director will report to the VP of APP Services. When on clinical duty, the APP director will collaborate with the assigned physician.
Supervision Exercised: Administrative supervision is exercised over APP Managers within the assigned areas.
QualificationsAdministrative Experience
3 years formal leadership experience or 2 years progressive leadership experience with proven ability to manage large, multi-disciplinary teams, ideally including PAs, NPs, and other advanced practitioners.Demonstrated success in driving organizational change, promoting innovation, and adapting to the shifting landscape of healthcare.Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels of the organization.Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures to improve operational efficiency and quality.Strong independent decision-making abilities paired with excellent analytical problem-solving skills.Physician Assistant Candidate:
Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by ARC-PA or one of its predecessor agencies.Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required.Current DEA registration required.BLS required (ACLS may be required depending on delineation of additional privileges not included in core privileges).Seven years of APP clinical experience in a specialty relevant to the practice area.Nurse Practitioner Candidate:
Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner program.Current DEA registration required.BLS required (ACLS may be required depending on delineation of additional privileges not included in core privileges).Seven years of APP clinical experience in a specialty relevant to the practice area.Note: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.
