APRN/PA Supervisor Peds Emergency Department
Major Responsibilities: Practitioner: Directs the triage and management for the pediatric patients presenting in the Pediatric Emergency Department. Role expectations include assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the assigned patients in consultation with the Collaborating physician or designee.     1)Performs indirect and direct patient care for Pediatric patients with a high degree of knowledge and skill. Utilizes the scientific process and national standards of care as a framework for managing patient care.     2)Independently provides care through history taking, physical assessment and interpretation of diagnostic procedures. Obtains necessary consents. Maintains a collaborative practice agreement with phyicians. May hold prescriptive authority from the collaborating physician. Coordinates care between attending physicians, residents, nursing staff and other disciplines as appropriate     3)Consults with nursing staff in the development and evaluation of nursing care plans for patients and support systems with complex needs.     4)Participates in managing care and communicates to other members of the healthcare team as appropriate.     5)Promotes patient safety by reporting of issues through established channels and participating as requested in patient safety initiatives. Review labs, x-rays and follow up appropriately. Provides timely updates to the Collaborating physician or designee and discusses any significant changes in the patient's condition.     6)Acts as a resource to nursing staff for complex patients and assists staff in assessing and planning the care of these patients.     7)Obtains consults from other specialty services as per discussion with Collaborating physician. Administrative/Leadership: Demonstrates leadership qualities that reflect accountability and interdependence consistent with goals of the organization.     1)Assumes leadership role for the Pediatric Emergency APN service.     2)Responsible for hiring, firing, evaluation of APNs in the program in collaboration with Director, Medical Director, manager and Director.     3)Responsible for oversight and development of APN orientation program. Collaborates with other APC supervisors to have standardized approach to on boarding of APNs.     4)Attends educational offerings to maintain knowledge and skills. Insures that NPs are up to date on competencies, etc.     5)Responsible for scheduling NPs to maintain optimal clinical coverage.     6)Assures that standards of care are being practiced in accordance with regulatory agencies, i.e., Accrediting Organization, IDPH, etc.     7)Reviews and recommends changes in departmental policies, revises procedures in conjunction with new or changing theories, standards of practice and current technology.     8)Participates in and supports Performance Improvement/Clinical Excellence initiatives within the Medical Center and system wide.     9)Data collection, entry and reporting as assigned. Educator: Provides ongoing education to all participants in patient care including the parents/family as well as the healthcare providers.     1)Provide individualized communication to family/patient regarding treatment plan.     2)Facilitates educational programs provided by NP service to internal and external customers.     3)Collaborates with unit leadership to utiilize evidence based practices in Pediatric Emergency Department, provide clinical excellence and measure the competency of the staff.     4)Provides bedside education geared toward enhancing nursing knowledge and the advancement of nursing practice.     5)Reviews and updates teaching resources for patients, families and nursing staff. Consultant: Serves as a consultant and/or resource person for hospital personnel in area of specialization. Accepts referrals and collaborates with physicians, nurses and other members of the interdisciplinary team in planning the care of patients needing specialized nursing. Initiates referral to other healthcare providers and resource agencies as necessary.     1)Plans and conducts patient/family conferences to assist in planning of care, collaborating with social services, pharmacy, home health nurses and financial staff.     2)Provides clinical resources for nursing staff and healthcare providers. Mentors individual staff members in their clinical development.     3)Provides consultation to staff, management, administration and other disciplines related to their area of expertise.     4)Provides peer consultation and support to the Advance Practice Council.     5)Provides consultation to external agencies.     6)Serves as a mentor/preceptor to undergraduate and graduate students as appropriate.     7)Advocates for children and their families by participating in local, regional or national health care intitiatives, education or legislative efforts. Researcher: Promotes research findings by making appropriate recommendations for changes in policies, procedures, and practice.     1)Integrates relevant nursing research into present practice.     2)Assists staff in the application of research findings to professional practice.     3)Role models research utilization.     4)Expands the scientific base of nursing practice by participating in and/or conducting clinical research as appropriate.     5)Utilities applicable resources and information systems to obtain and report outcome data.     6)Participates in product review as requested.

Licensure:Nurse, Registered (RN) AND Nurse, Advanced Practice (APN) AND Nurse, APN Controlled Substance (APNCS)

Education/Experience Required:• Master’s prepared (MSN, MS, etc.) required. • 5+ years recent experience in clinical specialty. • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. This position will need to recognize the needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients, i.e., understand normal patterns of pediatric and adult behavior, prior experience with various age groups is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:• Strong analytical skills. • Proven leadership skills. • Good organizational skills • Basic computer knowledge. • Effective communication and presentation skills. • Current RN license in the State of Illinois. • Current APRN (NP, CNP) certification PNP preferred, with specialty certification in Emergency nursing • CPR Certification. PALS 50 hours of CEU in Pediatric Critical Care every 2 years.

Physicial Requirements and Working Conditions: • Ability to work flexible hours according to customer needs. • May be exposed to hazardous materials and life-threatening diseases. • Ability to prioritize independently and respond to multiple simultaneous requests. • Lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. • Ability to communicate with patients/families. • Ability to travel locally. • Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations. • Ability to prescribe medications when applicable with appropriate licensure and credentialing. For patient lifts of over 20 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
