Summary These positions are located in multiple duty locations within the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management. This position is concurrently open to Merit Promotion eligibles under Announcement Number BLM-NM-25-12556080-MP-OPM. Salary Ranges: Albuquerque, New Mexico: GS-07: $49,541 - $64,405 GS-09: $60,597 - $78,776 GS-11: $73,317 - $95,310 Carlsbad, New Mexico, Socorro, New Mexico, and Norman, Oklahoma: GS-07: $49,025 - $63,733 GS-09: $59,966 - $77,955 GS-11: $72,533 - $94,317 Responsibilities Major duties of the full performance archaeologist include the inventory of cultural sites, curation of collections from public lands, inform and consult with land owners, state government officials, tribal nations, and the public on proposed projects, ensure compliance with section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act, writes and prepares resource input for environmental documents, conducts public outreach and educational activities, ensures that inventory and site data are entered, managed, and utilized in various geospatial databases, maintains budget and accomplishment tracking for the field office cultural program, and may serve as contract officer representative for contracts and/or program officer for assistance agreements. Inventory of cultural sites, curation of collections from public lands, inform and consult with land owners, state government officials, tribal nations, and the public on proposed projects. Ensure compliance with section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Ensure inventory and site data are entered, managed, and utilized in various geospatial databases. Maintain budget and accomplishment tracking for the field office cultural program. Conduct public outreach and educational activities. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. A driver's license is required in order to perform field work. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify for this Archeologist position, you must meet the Basic Requirement AND the Specialized Experience and/or Additional Education requirements described below. BASIC REQUIREMENT: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included the following: three (3) semester hours each in the following course areas: 1) History of archeology; 2) Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3) Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; and 5) Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; -AND- Six (6) semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; -AND- Archeological field school. OR, Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a related curriculum such as anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in the statement above (including archeological field school). OR, An equivalent combination of education and experience. College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in statement above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. OR, Four (4) years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project. AND, SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE and/or Additional EDUCATION Requirement: Specialized Experience GS-07 : One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) assisting with routine archeological surveys to include site testing and excavation, (2) drafting heritage resources reports, (3) entering inventory and/or site data into various geospatial databases; (4) following federal and state laws and regulations relating to heritage resources. OR, Education : Successful completion of one (1) year of graduate education from an accredited college or university in a field directly related to the work of the position. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. OR, Combination: An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education described above, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. OR, Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): Successful completion all the requirements for a bachelor's degree in a curriculum that is qualifying for this position, from an accredited college or university, and meet one of the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement based on the following: (1) class standing (upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.); (2) grade-point average (3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on the official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as computed based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (3) election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. Specialized Experience GS-09: One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) conducting site testing of structures, features, or objects identified in surveys; (2)using geospatial technologies such as Global Positioning (GPS), and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to record archeological sites and features ; (3) photographing artifacts for curation to produces quality photographs for report publications; (4) conducting educational activities about heritage resources. OR, Education: Successful completion of at least two years year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree from an accredited college or university in a field directly related to the work of the position. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. OR, Combination: An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education described above, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. Please note only graduate education in excess of one year (18 semester hours) may be used to qualify under this option. Specialized Experience GS-11: One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) conducting archeological site inventories and cataloging; (2) participating in discussions with groups such as land owners, state and tribal government officials, and the public regarding the significance of discovered cultural resources; (3) preparing archeological survey and excavation reports; (4) using geospatial technologies such GPS, GIS, and the use of computer systems to retrieve data related to heritage resource management activities. OR, Education: Successful completion at least three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in a field directly related to the work of the position. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. OR, Combination: An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education described above, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. Please note only graduate education in excess of two years (36 semester hours) may be used to qualify under this option. To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work. If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society. GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study. Additional Information This position is considered a career ladder opportunity, with a full performance level of GS-11. If selected at a lower grade level, you may be non-competitively promoted to the next grade level at the discretion of your supervisor and is contingent upon meeting regulatory and legal requirements for promotion, satisfactory performance, and the availability of higher-level work. Physical Demands: Field work routinely requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing or walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces or mountainous terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping or reaching; using hand tools such as shovels, trowels, or screening devices; and lifting of moderately heavy items such as equipment and samples.
