Area Manager I

General Summary

This position is responsible for all operations of the geographic area of the South Puget Sound area including providing leadership (including setting clear expectations), oversight and strategic direction to ensure the delivery of short and long term goals (with revenue under $20 million).

Essential Job Accountabilities

Assist in the preparation and implementation of strategic plan for the area and business unit that promotes growth of the business unit and its capabilities, which are consistent with the Group and corporate strategic plans and goals.

Prepare and communicate accurate and timely financial forecasts, budgets, and projections.

Be a visible model and champion for our employees to conduct themselves and our business activities consistent with our Core Values and Code of Conduct; enhancing our reputation for truthfulness and fair dealing.

Ensure that the Company’s Safety programs are implemented, and that there is zero tolerance for non-compliance with minimum safety standards set by the Corporate and Group leadership.  Work diligently to create an environment with the ultimate goal of “ZERO” accidents. 

Develop and mentor, ensuring that Area employees are properly trained in the skills necessary for success at Granite, given opportunity for stretch assignments, and given full access (including transfer) for leadership development. Embrace leadership and employee development with active participation in Employee Development initiatives. Performance-manage employees resulting in high performance teams.

Promote change and the Pursuit of Excellence in the geographic area. Build a culture that strives to lead the industry in technological and process improvement. 

Collaborate with Group Functional leadership in developing best practices and personnel inside the business unit. Ensure that area personnel meet the highest standards as set by functional leaders, and take an active part in personnel and team development. Ensure that Group Functional leaders are an integral part of employee development. Include Group Functional leadership in area leadership individual development dialogues.

Actively participate in bid reviews for all large dollar and/or complicated bids to ensure estimate accuracy, risk and opportunity assessment, and strength and weakness analysis is consistent with overall Group expectations.

Champion growth initiatives in the area, including pro-forma and market analysis for acquisitions. Ensure that acquisition opportunities are consistent with the strategic plan, and meet Group and Corporate goals.

Develop strategic and professional relationships; work to build alliances with politicians, customers, vendors and subcontractors to ensure Granite is a well respected leader in the local community.

When requested, provide personnel and development opportunities to help build bench strength for Company growth.  

In union shop environments, when necessary, act as a consultant with labor relations, to the collective bargain process. In merit shop environments, work with the Corporate and local benefits coordinators to ensure Granite’s programs provide the appropriate benefit coverage and compensation for non-union craft employees.

Ensure that the Company’s equipment standards and policies are being met. Include Corporate Functional equipment leadership in regular inspection of branch equipment resources. 

Education

BS degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or related field or equivalent work experience in heavy civil, highway or construction and management.

Work Experience

Minimum of eight (8) years experience, five (5) of which with Granite, or its affiliates.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

Knowledge of construction operations (technology, equipment, methods), company policies, procedures and standards.

Knowledge of craft employee relations, Union and/or Open Shop, including the collective bargaining process as well as all employee related laws and regulations.

Experience in estimating of earthwork, concrete, utility, paving, structures, underground, as well as other construction operations.

Excellent communication, organizational, supervisory, and planning skills required.

Proficiency with all MS Office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. 

Excellent organizational, supervisory, and decision making/problem solving skills essential.

Strong written and oral communication skills to effectively disseminate information.

Advanced knowledge of Granite’s policies and business procedures.

Physical Demands 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit and use hands to operate a computer keyboard. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. At times will be working around large construction equipment, must be safety conscience.

Benefits may vary for positions located outside of the continental United States.

Base Salary Range: 

$131,917.00 - $197,876.00

Pay may vary based upon relevant experience, skills, location, and education among other factors.  ​
