**MISSION STATEMENT** The mission of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public **SUMMARY** The ideal candidate will have an interest in radiology, scrubbing into procedures, and will have the Family/Individual across the lifespan specialty. Shift: Monday - Friday | 8am - 5pm with one rotating 8-hour shift starting at 6:30am. The primary purpose of the Diagnostic Imaging (DI) Advanced Practice Provider (APP) position is to provide diagnostic and therapeutic patient care under the direct supervision of a physician. The scope is patient management before, during and after diagnostic and therapeutic radiological procedures in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit. **JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES** Clinical Management and Patient Care 1. Performs history and physical examination focused on the specific body region/system(s) relevant to the DI procedure. In this role, knowledge of human anatomy and physiology must be appropriate and complete. 2. Ordering and interpreting of pertinent laboratory and diagnostic studies/imaging. Patient satisfaction will be derived from above average interpersonal skills while describing the procedure, its risks and benefits, alternatives, patient, and family education as well being able to answer questions, and obtaining informed, written consent. 3. The APP will be expected to write prescriptions and orders within their licensed scope of practice. 4. Participates in procedures either as an assistant to faculty or primary proceduralist with physician supervision. This will require above average manual dexterity for the use of needles, syringes, and catheters to assist in biopsies and lumbar punctures. The knowledge of sterile techniques will be essential for proper patient preparation. 5. Participates and collaborates in clinical research protocols. Research duties including clinical/data collection, management and obtaining informed consent when delegated to. 6. Manages post-procedure care involving for both outpatients and inpatients. Outpatients post procedure care includes coordinating with primary service for subsequent procedures and repeat imaging as well as providing appropriate expectations and instructions for follow-up. Practice-Based Learning and knowledge 1. Holds an integral role in the patient management team. This will include above average telephone and personal communication skills for consultation with patients, physicians, nurses, and other medical team members. 2. The DI APP is also called to evaluate patients in recovery to identify and manage post procedure problems. The APP is expected to formulate a plan with the DI physician and primary team regarding subsequent management and or procedure(s). Will also be involved in catheter and procedure related issues and or complications. 3. Understanding the role of imaging techniques and applying appropriate dose and following guidelines and policy when performing procedures. 4. The use of a radiology lead apron will be necessary in the procedure rooms. No physical limitations as such are permitted. Exposure to radiation will occur and will be controlled in appropriate limits set by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). No access to such will be permitted while pregnant. Professionalism 1. Other duties as assigned. **REQUIREMENTS** **EDUCATION** PA - Required: Graduate of a Physician Assistant training program approved by the Council of Medical Education of the American Medical Association. APRN - Required: Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population **EXPERIENCE** : Required: None Preferred: Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) with 1 year of experience. **LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION** : PA - Required: All of the following: PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants. Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners. Must meet the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if working in one of following department: Pediatrics - Patient Care (113100). APRN - Required: All of the following: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) If working in the following departments: Pediatric - Patient Care (113100). **MAY BE REQUIRED:** Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas. Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
