Job Overview (What You’ll Do):
Cotopaxi is seeking an experienced Art Director to shake up our visual direction and propel us to become the next billion-dollar outdoor brand. As Art Director, you’ll work with the VP of Creative to oversee the entire visual identity of Cotopaxi, and you’ll be responsible for the execution of campaigns and marketing assets across all channels. You’ll be a creative visionary and leader, with experience guiding major marketing campaigns that are both visually interesting and conceptually compelling. You’ll direct photo and video productions and collaborate with writers, designers, photographers, and videographers to produce captivating work. You’ll be able to interpret briefs and understand the business objectives involved, then deliver on strategies to achieve results. You'll lead the graphic design group—guiding and mentoring our creatives with your unique combination of artistic taste and proven management experience.
Job Responsibilities (How You’ll Do It):
+ Shape and evolve Cotopaxi’s visual identity. You’ll deliver a recognizable visual edge that stands out in the outdoor industry. You’ll help us evolve and uplevel our visual direction, creating tighter standards around photography, videography, graphic design, iconography, and illustration.
+ Lead campaign conceptual development . You’ll collaborate with Creative and Social teams to define conceptual and stylistic approaches for marketing campaigns. You’ll lead out on visual development by creating mood boards, shot lists, and other pre-visualization work, and you’ll pitch those concepts to senior leadership. You’ll bring that same conceptual rigor to all projects—from larger integrated campaigns to smaller, social-forward pieces.
+ Direct photo/video shoots. You’ll bring a distinct and compelling aesthetic to life by making key creative decisions in pre-production, production, and post-production settings. You’ll select photographers, videographers, and other creative talent. You’ll work with our production team to scout locations and determine the right outdoor activities for shoots. You’ll be in-studio and on location to direct this work. You’ll make photo selects, oversee photo editing and retouching, advise on video edits, guide layout design, and drive visuals through to completion.
+ Oversee visual output across all sales channels. You’ll partner with channel owners to create stunning work across multiple touch points, including emails, paid ads, organic social, web design, and print assets.
+ Manage and mentor the design group. Your management experience will elevate the work of our graphic designers and photographers. You’ll assess the group’s capacity and workload. You’ll provide guidance and opportunities for growth and will be a positive, motivating force on the Creative team.
+ Execute on strategy. Your ideas won’t just look pretty, they’ll be grounded in business needs and will deliver results.
+ Evolve design processes. You’ll improve the quality and the capacity of our team by constantly searching for ways to do better work in a better way.
+ Shake things up. You’ll be on the cutting edge of what’s working in marketing and design. You’ll have the ingenuity to search for new ways of doing things, and you’ll take the initiative to implement those ideas.
The Ideal Candidate (What You Need to Succeed):
Experience
+ 10+ years in a design-related field.
+ Minimum of 3 years as an Art Director (5+ years preferred).
+ Background in direct-to-consumer eCommerce businesses.
+ Experience working with both agency and in-house teams.
+ Bachelor's degree in a design-related field, or equivalent experience.
Photo/Video
+ Deep understanding of photo and video production.
+ Experience directing and overseeing shoots.
+ Proficiency in editing software, including Premiere, After Effects, and Capture One.
Design
+ Ability to define and execute graphic design direction—hands-on when needed.
+ Strong expertise in peripheral design processes, including photo and video art direction, illustration art direction, print production, environmental design, and packaging design.
+ Proficiency in design software such as Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
+ Expertise in responsive design with a strong focus on a mobile-first approach.
Advertising
+ Strong conceptual thinker with a deep understanding of what drives successful campaign ideas.
+ Ability to balance high-production traditional campaigns with fast-turn, social-first content that maximizes audience impact while maintaining cost efficiency.
Leadership
+ Proven experience leading and managing creative teams.
+ Strong collaboration, communication, and presentation skills.
+ Business-minded approach with the ability to align creative efforts with company objectives.
