Department Summary:

MITRE’s Center for Government Effectiveness and Modernization (CGEM) works across US Treasury, Commerce, and the Veterans’ Administration. These agencies affect every household in the country; our job is to make them more effective. The Tax and Data Analytics department (P823) is seeking a Senior Artificial Intelligence Engineer to join our team, located in McLean, VA. As a key member of our data management and strategy team, the Senior Artificial Intelligence Engineer will help the IRS and Tax Administration Division (ITA) by providing technical expertise and task/project leadership on projects using artificial intelligence (AI) and automation to achieve sponsor mission goals. Our data-intensive work includes:

Improving the customer experience for people interacting with the agencyDetecting tax non-compliance (identity theft, fraud, filing error, missing filings …)Anticipating non-compliance (developing schemes before observation is feasible)Sampling and design of experimentsForecasting (service demand, resource performance, program value)Assessing tools and technology for government data science useDeveloping data and analytics strategy

Roles & Responsibilities:

Apply AI concepts to solve tax administration problems.Select and develop appropriate AI-based methods and techniques for the problem at hand.Develop actionable insights based on analysis across multiple structured and unstructured data sources.Be knowledgeable of industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes related to artificial intelligencePerform across a broad range of assignments.Work independently with minimal instructions, guidance, and direction.

Basic Qualifications:

Requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.Academic background in mathematics, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or related technical field.Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically.Experience in designing and implementing data-intensive AI solutions.Excellent communication skills, with the ability to link technical results to the business domain.Demonstrated proficiency with programming languages, such as Python, Java, or similarProficiency with machine learning and/or deep learning frameworksExperience with natural language processing (NLP) and/or Large Language Models (LLMs)Must be able to obtain & maintain a US government security clearance (IRS – Suitability)This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.Experience with data engineering and data querying languages such as SQLExperience with AI model monitoring, test, and evaluation (e.g., drift detection, bias)Demonstrated knowledge of the tax administration ecosystem, e.g., compliance processes, taxpayer service, IRS technology and infrastructureFamiliarity with data architecture and data management concepts and strategies, such as the data lifecycle, data stewardship and governanceExperience working with or leading multidisciplinary teams
