Job Summary & General Information
Hours Per Week: Availability between 7:30am to 6:30pm (actual shift will vary); 40-50 hours/week
The City of Alpharetta Recreation, Parks and Cultural Services Department is seeking Arts Center and FFA Log Cabin Summer Day Camp Director. The purpose of this position is to assist with the organizing and supervising of the day-to-day operation of the summer camp program. The Camp Director reports to the Program Coordinator, and Supervisor at the Alpharetta Arts Center. The Camp Director would need to be available to work from May 21 – August 1 with additional hours required starting as early as April 1 to help with inventory, camp planning, and staff interviews.
Job Description
The purpose of this position is to organize and supervise the day-to-day operation of Arts and Culture summer camp program. This position will report to the Arts Center Supervisor, Program Coordinator. The Camp Manager is responsible for coordinating staff schedules, activities, policies, and procedures. Responsibilities include the overall management of the camps programs and their operation.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
The Camp Director will be responsible for:
+ Ordering and inventorying all camp supplies in preparation of first day of camp.
+ Training, supervising, motivating, and evaluating a staff of camp counselors and volunteer counselors; reviewing progress and directing changes as needed.
+ Organizing staff workloads, work schedules, and assignments
+ Assists Supervisor in monitoring and evaluating effectiveness of camp program.
+ Prepares all communication to parents and runs weekly reports in preparation to camp schedules.
+ Coordinates and implements camp schedule of activities; makes recommendations regarding purchase of supplies for camp; maintains inventory of camp supplies.
+ Communicates with visual arts instructors about studio and program needs; assists camp instructors during class sessions; makes recommendations for replacement items; supervise tasks assigned to camp councilors staff.
+ Assists supervisor in development of and adheres to policies and procedures related to assigned camp and ensures compliance by staff and campers; assists in the handling of disciplinary actions as needed.
+ Coordinates logistical set-up and clean-up of camp including group area/location assignment and schedule; cleanliness of camp areas or studios as applies.
+ Plans age-appropriate games, crafts, and activities as needed for children between the ages of 7 -13.
+ Prepares accident/incident reports as needed and follows established procedures for reporting accidents/incidents; handles medical, safety and severe weather emergencies per the procedures noted in the camp staff manual and during in-service training; completes needed reports and submits them to the appropriate party.
+ Assists supervisor with organization of pre-camp staff training and participates in in-service training as required.
+ Assists in arts and history community programs as needed. Other duties as required.
+ Maintains positive relationships with parents, campers, and staff.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by two to three years previous experience and/or training that includes supervision in a camp environment; or any equivalent combination of education and specialized training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Teacher certification is preferred.
+ At least two (2) years of paid or volunteer experience planning, organizing and supervising art and recreational activities for groups of children ages 7-13 in a structured environment is preferred.
+ Individuals with a background in art education or formal art instruction are strongly desired.
+ Applicant must have considerable knowledge of summer camp planning and administration.
+ Applicant must have strong leadership, customer service and interpersonal skills.
+ Applicant must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions. Exceptional communication skills are essential.
+ Applicant must have PC computer skills, particularly with the internet, e-mail, MS Excel and Word documents. Applicant must be willing to work cooperatively with others.
+ Applicant must be able to interpret policies and procedures.
+ Applicant must provide their own transportation.
+ Applicant must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Applicant must be willing to work a flexible daytime schedule, Monday through Friday, from May 21 through August 1.
+ Applicant must be able to attend mandatory Camp Staff orientation/training sessions scheduled Monday May 27.
Pre-Employment Requirements
+ Applicant must clear a criminal background check.
+ Applicant must pass a mandatory drug test.
+ Hired applicants must possess a valid certificate of course completion for First Aid training that includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Children and Infant, first aid, and AED. This training must be from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. The City of Alpharetta will offer a CPR course during the week of camp training for all those who need this certification.
