Aseptic Maintenance Apprentice - Days (D2)

General Description:

The Aseptic Maintenance Apprentice is responsible for completing assigned maintenance duties to ensure customer, team member, and vendor satisfaction. The Aseptic Maintenance Apprentice does this by performing the breakdown of equipment and performing repairs under the guidance of a job trainer or experienced maintenance mechanic on all filling, packaging, processing, and palletizing equipment. Complete assigned preventative maintenance on production and supporting equipment.  Responsible for performing all required operating procedures The Aseptic Maintenance Apprentice will assist in diagnosing, repairing, and replacing industrial equipment in a fast-paced production environment. The Aseptic Maintenance Mechanic completes these functions in support of the manufacture of dairy-related products.

Job Responsibilities:

Responsible for achieving assigned goals in the areas of maintenance, safety, quality, performance, and cost. Perform tasks issued by the maintenance trainer with assistance as needed. Troubleshoot support system problems using problem-solving skills guidance of a job trainer or an experienced maintenance mechanic. Responsible for maintaining the production schedule, meeting order expectations, and monitoring variances. Responsible for troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing mechanical malfunctions to increase productivity and equipment capabilities – including, but not limited to disassembling and reassembling machinery, overhauling gearboxes, replacing bearings/bushings/etc – under the direction of job trainer or experienced mechanic. Assist in the reading of blueprints, schematics, and diagrams to determine the method and sequence of assembly of a part, machine, or piece of equipment. Expedite the reentry of down equipment within a manufacturing environment to working conditions. Repair and calibrate hydraulic and pneumatic assemblies under the direction of job trainer. Test the performance of electro-mechanical assemblies using test instruments such as multi-meters, volt, and amp meters under the direction of the job trainer. Install electronic parts and hardware, using soldering equipment and hand tools under the direction of the job trainer. Operate, test, program and maintain complete manufacturing lines such as beverage filling machines, conveyors and palletizers under direction of job trainer. Source parts from vendors when parts are unavailable or have long lead times; order parts in a timely manner to ensure equipment reliability. Maintain Maintenance Inventory System to ensure accurate inventories. Communicate effectively between shifts and other departments, including the status of equipment to supervisors/coworkers at the end of the shift as well as log book documentation. Responsible for complying with GMPs, SOPs, corporate and/or plant policies, rules, and regulations. Responsible for following OEM manuals and executing accurate and precise procedures according to those manuals. Provides assistance and support to all areas in the production facility as assigned by supervisor/lead. Responsible for gaining competence on line circuits and learning proper hookups are made in the facility. Cover breaks and lunches and other staffing needs as assigned by their supervisor/lead. Compliant with all legal requirements concerning dairy processing and safety on their assigned shift and report concerns to their supervisor/lead. Work in a safe manner, and reports safety concerns promptly to their supervisor/lead and take corrective actions as necessary to ensure a safe environment. Responsible for reporting food safety problems and initiating action and for supporting SQF by maintaining food safety and food quality. Ensure work areas are sanitary and strictly adhere to sanitation practices All other duties as assigned by leadership. 

 Essential Knowledge, and Skills:

Ability to apply basic to complex mathematical concepts such as adding, counting, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and knowledge of weights and measure, to sufficiently handle job tasks. Understand and respond appropriately to basic to complex employee, vendor, and customer inquiries. Knowledge of Root Cause Analysis, Troubleshooting methodology, 5S, and Lean Manufacturing concepts. Knowledge of OSHA general safety regulations; PPE, energy control, confined space, chemical safety, and fall protection. Knowledge of boilers, ammonia refrigeration, steam, air compressors, HVAC, sprinkler systems, and electrical systems. Skills at apprentice to intermediate level in at least one area of Maintenance including electrical fabrication, refrigeration, welding, controls programming, etc Knowledge of common wear points on equipment and follow manufacturer lubrication recommendations. Have a disciplined aptitude for repair and uptime urgency. Own a variety of quality tools including SAE and Metric, to perform mechanical repairs on automation equipment. Read, write, and communicate using English language sufficient to perform job functions (Other preferences will be given for special language skills when there is a business need). Knowledge of the company's mission, purpose, goals, and your role in achieving each of them. Ability to operate facility equipment as required in assigned area. Satisfactorily complete all company training requirements. Ability to interpret company documents and literature and UPC/code information.

Education/Experience:

Minimum of GED or High School Diploma is highly preferred Minimum 0-2 years’ maintenance manufacturing experience or related field Technical Training, electrical/mechanical technician degree, or strong aptitude and experience on equivalent equipment is required Experience working in a food manufacturing environment preferred

Performance Standards:

Responsible for reporting to work at scheduled times and communicating tardiness and absences with the assigned Supervisor/Manager prior to the occurrence. Responsible for reporting to work in a condition to work. Responsible for being well-groomed and dressed in a business-and position-appropriate attire at all times including ensuring compliance with GMP dress code standards. Comply with performance criteria, standards of conduct as contained in company policy, employment procedures and responsibilities as described in the company handbook. Maintain a safe work environment at all times and immediately report and take appropriate action to correct a safety concern. Responsible for completing all assigned tasks and responsibilities as assigned. Participate and complete maintenance training classes offered to become certified as a Maintenance Mechanic. 

Work Schedule:

Requires morning, afternoon and overnight availability any day of the week based on assigned shift. Requests to be scheduled off for a specific day require advance notification and approval by Supervisor/Manager. Generally scheduled for 36-48 hours (12 hour shifts); more hours may be required based on the needs of the business. 

Environmental:

Normally protected from weather and temperature changes possible exposure to hot cold wet, humid or windy weather conditions does exist. May be subject to exposure to ingredients used in the manufacture of food products including allergens May be subject to exposure to chemicals involved in the manufacture and sanitation of a food processing facility.

Physical Job Requirements:

Ability to move throughout all areas of the facility including but not limited to office, production, and warehouse environments. Including the outside perimeter of the building. Able to wear all necessary personal protective equipment to perform job functions. Stand and/or sit continuously and perform job functions for a full shift with meal break. Physically able to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, twist, lift, push, pull, climb, balance, crouch, handle and move items weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance and move objects exceeding 50 pounds with reasonable accommodations. Visual acuity corrected to perform job functions.

The wage range for this role considers the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. At Byrne, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $27.50 to $35.00.
