The External Investing Group (“XIG”) provides investors with investment and advisory solutions, across leading hedge fund managers, private equity funds, real estate managers, public equity strategies and fixed income strategies. XIG manages globally diversified programs, targeted sector-specific strategies, customized portfolios, and a range of advisory services. Our investors access opportunities through new fund commitments, fund-of-fund investments, strategic partnerships, secondary-market investments, co-investments, and seed-capital investments. With over 350 professionals across 11 offices around the world, XIG provides manager diligence, portfolio construction, risk management, and liquidity solutions to investors, drawing on Goldman Sachs’ market insights and risk management expertise. The XIG hedge fund team is the part of the External Investing Group (XIG) responsible for sourcing, examining, and investing in leading external hedge fund managers. The team has been in this business since 1969, making it one of the first multi-managers in the industry. As of December 2023, the team managed over $24 billion across portfolios of hedge funds, customized solutions, and advisory relationships. The team covers a wide number of strategies including fundamental equity long short, credit, event driven, macro, CTAs, multi-strategy and quantitative funds. Investors include public pensions, corporate pensions, financial institutions, endowments, foundations, and high net worth individuals. This diverse and broad investor base is beneficial for XIG, both as a source of capital and as a resource for us in the markets where we invest. Our group has sought to establish deep and longstanding relationships with leading institutional hedge fund investors and have benefited from Goldman Sachs’ strong relationships with ultra-high net worth individuals. Responsibilities:
This role is the primary risk manager of managing risk across single and multi-manager hedge funds SMA portfolios in a T+0 environment. Lead the SMA platform’s hedging program, collaborating closely with the portfolio managers and key senior stakeholders. Specifically, the person is responsible for the primary research, including back-testing and implementation strategy of the factor hedging program.Create customized risk report for single and multi-manager hedge funds SMA portfolios and proactively explore and develop new tools and approaches to track, understand and analyze risk exposure and performance of portfolios.Conduct standard and factor performance attribution and PnL diagnostics for SMA funded managers.Ensure effective execution and supervision of the agreed upon manager and portfolio level risk management processes and protocols by regular interaction with relevant stakeholders.Communicate analytical results, diligence observations and conclusions to portfolio managers, clients and other stakeholders verbally and through written memos and presentations.Work closely with hedge funds SMA external risk analytics vendors and XIG internal stakeholders in refining, updating, and developing risk frameworks, models, and analytics used for evaluating and monitoring XIG invested third-party investment advisors and portfolios via SMA.Desired Skills/Qualifications:
Highly motivated and intellectually curious individual with 8 years+ of relevant industry experience related to market risk management, equity factor and custom baskets research or quantitative risk modeling and analytics Strong understanding of factor models, including but not limited to Axioma, Barra and Wolf Research etc.Experience of custom designing and implementing factor hedging solutionsExperience with one or more of the following systems is strongly preferred: Lightkeeper, GS Marquee, GS Plottool, MSCI RiskMetrics, Bloomberg PORT, Enfusion and Omega Point Experience of working at long-short hedge funds in similar capacity is strongly preferredUnderstanding of sell-side custom baskets construction is preferred Strong understanding in financial markets, trading, hedging and risk managementExcellent quantitative and analytical skills; strong academics in a quantitative discipline or finance major preferred; programming skills in Python, R or Excel VBA is preferred Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skillsSalary Range
The expected base salary for this New York, New York, United States-based position is $125000-$290000. In addition, you may be eligible for a discretionary bonus if you are an active employee as of fiscal year-end.
