Assignment Editor, Pictures

Reuters is seeking an experienced photojournalist or photo editor to join our team in Washington DC as Assignment Editor. The Editor will be responsible for the assigning of photographers in coverage of US politics and deputize for the North America Photo Editor in coverage of East Coast news at the start of a historic period unfolding around the second presidency of Donald Trump. 

The editor must enthusiastically embrace working with colleagues on a close-knit team to produce a competitive report.  This role will report to the North America Photo Editor and is offered on local terms. 

About the Role

In this opportunity as Assignment Editor, Pictures, you will:

Will work closely with editors, reporters and video journalists to create agenda-setting stories in the region within our new One Newsroom structure.Will ensure that photographers provide video and information for text reporting to the bureau on selected stories. Will be Reuters Pictures’ direct liaison with the incoming administration, photo pool and ensure journalistic integrity when covering the White House. Will manage an award-winning team of photographers to produce top quality news photography in DC and across the USA in close collaboration with photo editors on the Global Pictures Desk to contribute highly-competitive pictures to the Reuters News Pictures Service for global customers. Will establish and maintain relationships with key customers to ensure Reuters is addressing their needs. Work well in a team and also be a proven self-starter. An ability to work in a fast-paced newsroom across departments and visual formats is critical.

About You

You're a fit for the role of Assignment Editor, Pictures if your background includes:

Excellent photojournalism and/or editing skills proven by at least 5 years work experience as a full-time photojournalist or editor.An understanding of wire service clients and market needs both domestically and internationally.Understanding of video storytelling and needs of video clients.Proven experience in management, team leadership, and how to utilize the different strengths of team members.Excellent news judgment as well as a solid knowledge of US politics and government.A commitment to the Reuters Trust Principles and independent, unbiased, fact-based news.Demonstrated ability to compete at the highest level working under pressure against tight deadlines.Strong communication skills and the ability to work well in team environments, including at the White House and Capitol Hill.Fluency in English with the ability to write clear, error-free captions.Technical prowess and expertise working with current photo editing and transmitting software. Proven ability to network with sources, media liaisons, and clients.

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations. Eligible office location(s) for this role include one or more of the following: New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and/or Irvine, CA; McLean, VA; Washington, DC. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $146,790 - $272,610. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.
