Assistant Accountant (Short Term)

Reporting to the Senior Accountant - Financial Accounting, you will be responsible for managing the company’s petty cash, banking relationships, and financial transactions, thereby ensuring operational efficiency and adherence to financial regulations. This role includes ensuring timely and accurate completion of supplier payments within agreed credit terms while strictly complying with the organization’s established control procedures.

Your duties will include but not limited to the following: 

Prepare and process payments, including supplier payments, and intercompany transfers. Assist the Treasury Accountant to reconcile bank accounts and investigate discrepancies. Maintain banking records and coordinate with financial institutions on operational issues. Manage the company’s petty cash, ensuring funds are available for minor expenses. Record and reconcile petty cash transactions. Post manual payments in SAP immediately the instruction is fully approved and make follow ups that these are paid within 48 hours by the bank (manual payments MUST be posted in SAP before the instruction is sent to the bank and NOT after the LMC account is debited). Ensure all petty cash disbursements are properly authorized and supported by valid documentation. Timely and accurate review and processing of invoices in SAP Sort, code, and match invoices to purchase orders. Enter and post invoices in SAP within 48 hours from time of receipting the invoice against the PO by the warehouse staff.  Receive vendors’ statements monthly. Reconciliation of vendor accounts with Vendor monthly statements and following up on reconciling items. Liaising with Supply Chain and End-users in resolving matters arising from vendor statements and from Finance Query relating to any reconciling items. If matter is not resolved within seven working days, escalate to Senior Accountant. Post manual payments in SAP immediately the instruction is fully approved and make follow ups that these are paid within 48 hours by the bank (manual payments MUST be posted in SAP before the instruction is sent to the bank and NOT after the LMC account is debited. Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies Maintain positive relationships with vendors by addressing queries and disputes in a timely and professional manner Generate and analyze accounts payable reports to ensure accurate financial reporting

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field; or/and Professional accounting certification (e.g., ACCA, CIMA, or ZICA) is an advantage. Member of Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants. 2 years of experience in a similar role, preferably within a treasury or finance department. Able to clearly demonstrate the aptitude to drive a light vehicle and hold a current Zambian driver’s license. Be physically fit and be able to pass a pre-employment medical examination.  Proficiency in SAP and Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel Must have excellent written and oral communication skills in English and show a commitment to understand local culture. Proven ability to deliver results and act as a change agent. High level understanding of all relevant legislation affecting the employment and safety of persons in the mining industry in Zambia. Demonstrated application of continuous improvement ideas
