Assistant/Associate Athletic Director, Business Operations

Job Summary

This position will be responsible for the oversight of the athletic department business office and the department's budget, which includes all income, expense, and unrestricted and restricted fundraising accounts. In conjunction with this responsibility, this person will work with other departments on campus such as the comptroller's office, human resources, general counsel, the budget office, and procurement to ensure efficient operations of the business services.  Position will serve on department management team (Athletic Cabinet) and assume a leadership role in determining policies and procedures as they relate to business operations, camps and clinics, and financial reporting.

Essential Functions

Provide leadership and oversight of department’s daily financial operations including budgeting, planning, monitoring, reconciling and enforcement of related policies. Ensure stability and sustainability of departmental budget in compliance with University policy and procedures. Approve and track all financial transactions within Athletics and identify and/or correct any discrepancies. Responsible for the monitoring, reconciliation and auditing of all procurement cards under the policies set forth by the University Procurement office. Responsible for the development and communication of business office policies in compliance with university and audit procedures. Disburse budget updates to all budget administrators and reconcile all discrepancies. Serve as primary liaison to University General Accounting and Procurement departments. Partner with General Accounting in annual NCAA audit and submission of NCAA and EADA reporting. Responsible for the submission of financial reporting to NCAA and EADA. Supervision of full- and part-time staff members to ensure financial responsibility of the department while supporting the mission of providing a first-rate student athlete experience. Serve as the primary partner with human resources on matters relating to temporary and part-time employees and support the personnel process for all Athletics personnel as required. Develop strategies and forecasts for future budget models, identifying items to allocate resources towards in future years. Lead department business operations and revenue team on synergistic process that support fiscal responsibility and identify revenue opportunities.  Provide financial reports as needed to the Deputy Director of Athletics and Director of Athletics including the identification of potential budget shortfalls. Member of Athletics Cabinet, consisting of senior level managers (Associate & Assistant Athletic Directors) and key administrators (Directors, Assistant Directors). Cabinet supports the Athletic Director in the determining mission and action of the programs. Support operation of Bachelors Barge Club by serving on Boathouse Operating Committee, developing annual budget, monitoring financial transactions, producing financial reports, and overseeing other business functions. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics or the Deputy Director of Athletics. Oversee the budgets for University Recreation and partner with the Director of University Recreation to plan and monitor expenditures.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or related, or equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.) Minimum of 4 years of experience 4 years of experience working in business operations including exposure to accounting, finance, and staffing for Assistant Athletic Director level; minimum of 6 years of experience for Associate Director level. Proficient with Microsoft 365 products, most prominently Excel. Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills. Ability to work evenings and weekends a few times a year as needed and in case of an emergency.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree. Minimum of 6 years of experience working in Athletics and/or higher education. Strong leadership skills. Minimum of 4 years of experience working in an Athletics department business office. Experience managing/supervising professional staff.

Additional Information

This position is classified as Exempt. The salary grade for the Assistant Athletic Director role is L, with compensation ranging from $62,630 to $93,950 per year; The salary grade for the Associate Athletic Director role is M, with compensation ranging from $75,200 to $112,790 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
