Assistant/Associate Hospital Epidemiologist – Tufts Medical Center – Boston, MA

Tufts Medical Center Division of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Disease is seeking an Assistant/Associate Hospital Epidemiologist to join our growing team of outstanding physicians.

The Division of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Disease is experiencing growth across many programs including infections in immunocompromised hosts, infection prevention, antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship, outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy, medical microbiology, travel medicine, HIV, Mycobacterial diseases, care for people with substance use related infections, and care for people with tick borne illnesses.

Responsibilities for the Assistant/Associate Hospital Epidemiologist:

The Tufts Medical Center Infection Prevention program is at the forefront of quality improvement activities at the medical center. Members of the Infection Prevention team, which includes 3 infection preventionists, a data analyst, and 3 physicians, are responsible for an advanced program that includes surveillance of mandatory and non-mandatory hospital acquired infections, and numerous creative initiatives. The Assistant/Associate Director is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of infection prevention strategies that align with Joint Commission and CMS standards. Physician members have a close working relationship with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and sit on the state’s Hospital Acquired Infection Technical Advisory Group.

Assist the Hospital Epidemiologist in the management of the Infection Prevention Program of the hospital.

Collaborate with the Infection Prevention team.

Help develop and enforce the standards for infection prevention and precautions utilized throughout the hospital to protect patients, staff, and visitors from hospital-acquired infection.

Help identify and investigate outbreaks, documenting the cause and developing methods of prevention.

Assist with preparedness efforts related to an influx of patients with highly infectious pathogens including those related to bioterrorism, emerging infections, and epidemics.

The Assistant/Associate Hospital Epidemiologist will understand the structure and function of the Boston and Massachusetts Public Health Departments and will serve as the liaison between the hospital and those departments when the need arises.

Promote quality in healthcare and work with many stakeholders including the antimicrobial stewardship team, microbiology colleagues, the quality team, pharmacy, environmental services, facilities, emergency management, occupational health, the CMO, and will report to both the Hospital Epidemiologist and the Chief of ID, Dr. Vindenes

The Assistant/Associate Hospital Epidemiologist is expected to provide cutting edge research in infection Prevention under the mentorship of the Hospital Epidemiologist.

Participate in educational activities undertaken by the Hospital Epidemiology Department and Infection Prevention. 

The role also includes participation in the infectious diseases inpatient service, ambulatory clinic, and general infectious diseases division meetings, as well as ID fellow education. 

Education, Training and Experience required: 

It is expected that an Assistant/Associate Hospital Epidemiologist will have formal training in infection Prevention, board certification in infectious diseases, knowledge of epidemiology as a discipline, and experience working within an infection Prevention program.

Tufts Medicine offers a competitive salary commensurate with academic training and practice experience.
