Assistant/Associate Professor of Literacy Education (PK-6)
Location: Various Locations, NY Category: Faculty Posted On: Thu Feb 13 2025 Job Description: Empire State University seeks an Assistant/Associate Professor of Literacy Education (PK-6) to support our teacher education programs, including the M.Ed. in Literacy in development. The successful candidate will understand and have expertise in elementary literacy settings, with a preference for experience with research-based methods of elementary literacy instruction. The area of expertise for this position is open to applicants whose academic background and research interests include literacy development for PreK-6 youth, reading and writing for young learners, the intersection of reading/literacy and social justice issues, supporting diverse learners with literacy learning, and new media and children's literature. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching and advising graduate students across programs, developing and teaching online courses, and engaging in research and service. The successful candidate may also serve as coordinator for the new Literacy program (NYS PK-12 certification), teach and engage in course development in other graduate and undergraduate programs as determined by need and availability. Our faculty is committed to meeting the needs of adult learners and mentoring, motivating, and supporting our graduate students through consistent advisement, engaging instruction, and continuous program improvement. Job Requirements: Required Qualifications: + An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university in Literacy or a closely related field at the time of appointment. + Teacher certification in Literacy (Birth-Grade 6 or All Grades). + Evidence of knowledge of and experience with teaching PreK-6/elementary literacy methods in educational settings. + Ability to develop and teach courses in literacy education at the graduate level, including one or more of the following areas: Literacy Methods, Foundations of Literacy, Literature & Literacy, Teaching Critical Literacy, Literacy Development & Disabilities. + College or university level teaching experience. + An active commitment to scholarly work or has the potential for a coherent and robust research agenda. + Excellent oral and written communication skills. + Experience with supporting and engaging with a diverse student body. Preferred Qualifications: + Familiarity with current New York State teacher certification requirements and process. + Experience in online teaching and clinical experience supervision, particularly in PK-6 or PK-12. + Master-level teaching experience. + Demonstrated research interests in PreK-6 literacy, elementary literacy as a social justice issue, and the science of reading. + Potential for and/or record of an extramurally funded program of research. + Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English. Special Information: + Occasional travel will be required to fulfill university-wide commitments. + Office hours will vary to accommodate student needs. + Some evening and/or weekend engagement with students is required. + Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis.
