Job Summary
The School of History, Philosophy, and Religion at Oregon State University invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 9-month, fixed-term Assistant/Associate Professor of Teaching position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.
The School of History, Philosophy, and Religion at Oregon State University invites applicants for a non-tenure-track position as a Professor of Teaching at the assistant or associate rank with research specialties and teaching competencies in the following areas:
Area of Specialization ( AOS ):Ethics and Emerging Technologies; Ethics of Computing, AI, XR, Data, and/or Information Technologies
Area of Competence ( AOC ):Ethics and Technology; Research Ethics; Data Ethics; Social and Political Philosophy
The primary responsibilities of the Assistant/Associate Professor of Teaching position at Oregon State University include teaching courses, both in-person and online, developing expertise in curricular design and development, and applying distinctive pedagogical practices to foster critical thinking of students.
The teaching of both introductory and advanced classes taught through this position will provide an intellectual foundation in the subject areas for both majors and non-majors and advance each student’s knowledge and skills in the ethics of emerging technologies and related areas as described in the AOS and AOC . The courses will align with OSU’s new core education curriculum and explore issues of power and oppression with respect to emerging technologies.
The position also encompasses responsibilities for advising students.
Both teaching and research should cultivate interdisciplinary connections between philosophy and the humanities and various STEM fields, such as engineering. Research and scholarship may have a pedagogical focus or contribute to relevant professional fields.

Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Advising: 72%:
Teaching duties will include 8 courses /year over 3 trimesters; lower and upper division undergraduate / graduate courses; courses in ethics and technology, general philosophy, and areas related to the candidate’s teaching and research interests; advising students in the philosophy program.
Research: 18%:
Conduct research activities in philosophy and/or philosophical pedagogy that lead to the publication of scholarly work in peer-reviewed academic journals or books; presentations at academic conferences; and/or public-facing writing and presentations that engage audiences outside of higher education.
Service: 10%
Service responsibilities relating to activities in the School of History, Philosophy, and Religion, the College of Liberal Arts, Oregon State University, and professional associations. This may include tasks such as serving on program committees or peer reviews of teaching, and leadership in professional organizations.

+ PhD in Philosophy or a closely related area.
+ Evidence of successful college-level instruction
+ Demonstrated successful research profile and record of scholarly achievement and potential that aligns with an R1 research institution.

Additional Qualifications for the Rank of Associate Professor of Teaching:
+ 5 years of teaching experience relevant to the position
+ Demonstrated record of external grant awards
+ Demonstrated record of interdisciplinary work
