Job Summary
The College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 9-month, fixed-term, Assistant or Associate Professor of Teaching in Environmental Sciences position. Appointment at the Assistant Professor (Teaching) rank is anticipated; however, higher rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.
The responsibilities of this position in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences ( CEOAS ) at OSU consist of teaching on-campus and online (Ecampus) courses in Environmental Sciences, establishing and/or continuing an independent and funded research program; advising student research projects at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, serving on departmental, college, and University committees; and providing professional and community service. The incumbent will be responsible for course and curriculum development, and online course and digital content development, in part in collaboration with other faculty, and coordination of online and face-to-face course content.
This position supports the Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Program’s priorities of delivering high impact, applied, and career-integrated learning experiences for students, both in and out of the classroom. The incumbent will leverage their teaching, research, and engagement activities to support program efforts to increase experiential learning, career preparation, and professional networking opportunities for undergraduate students, in particular in the areas of environmental assessment, monitoring, and compliance. Professors of Teaching in the Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Program are integral and valued members of the program who contribute to teaching, scholarship, service, and our vision of the program’s future.
The Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Program is particularly interested in research in one or more of the following areas:
Pedagogical topics: experiential and community-engaged teaching approaches, including place-based learning, industry/agency/ NGO partnerships, flipped learning, and inquiry-based learning; development and leadership of experiential learning or career-integration opportunities; high impact teaching experiences for online teaching; community building and belonging for online degree programs.
Disciplinary topics: environmental impact assessment and mitigation; use of sensors or geospatial methods to detect and evaluate potential impacts of plans and projects on terrestrial, freshwater, or marine systems; regulatory frameworks for emerging environmental issues, such as climate change adaptation and resilience, carbon markets, chemical contaminants, carbon dioxide removal technologies, and renewable energy.

Key Responsibilities
75% – Teaching and Advising
Develop and teach introductory and advanced courses, primarily at the undergraduate level, both on-campus and online, as assigned by the Program Director. Example courses include ENSC 221 Environmental Field Studies, ENSC 321 Environmental Case Studies, a new upper division course in environmental compliance and analysis, and other courses in alignment with the incumbent’s area of expertise and programmatic needs.
Demonstrate command of the subject matter taught and undertake course and curriculum development and pedagogical development. Prepare and present class materials and assignments, grade assignments, and post student grades. Maintain office hours for courses. Maintain and update course content to meet programmatic needs and improve student success. Collaborate with other program faculty and OSU Ecampus on curriculum content and development. Dependent on course size, may supervise teaching assistants. Contribute to social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts; provide mentoring and opportunities for students from underrepresented groups; enable the advancement of diverse perspectives; and promote equitable outcomes among learners of diverse and underrepresented identity groups. Interact professionally, effectively, and in a timely fashion with students and University staff.
Advise students in credit or non-credit experiential learning and research experiences, especially Environmental Sciences undergraduate students. Mentor and support students in project definition, execution, and communication of results and outcomes.
15% – Research and Scholarship
Develop, establish, and maintain an active program of scholarly research that contributes to the effectiveness of educational programs in Environmental Sciences, workforce development, outreach and engagement, and/or the development of effective pedagogy. Achieve distinction in scholarly research as evidenced, for example, by national and international recognition, and/or external funding. Establish and maintain a program of research that supports timely promotion in rank and includes contributions to the field and/or broader impacts that benefit society. Publish scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, books or other media as appropriate to the area of interest. Disseminate research results by participation at national and international conferences and symposia, and other appropriate outreach and engagement efforts. Supervise research staff, graduate research assistants, and/or student employees as needed.
Research and scholarship may address pedagogical and/or disciplinary topics. Disciplinary research is expected to include substantial and meaningful engagement of undergraduate students, including but not limited to integrating research or practice into classroom activities, advising undergraduate thesis students, and developing new programs for engaging undergraduates in research, practice, or career-integration activities. Research may focus on any geographic region, with a preference for work that is applicable to the PNW .
10% – Service
Provide service to the college, university, and scientific and broader community to sustain and promote the college and university educational, research, and outreach missions. This may include, but is not limited to, any of the following:
+ Serve or lead College and University-level committees, including advising student clubs.
+ Support program excellence through strategic planning and student recruitment efforts.
+ Serve professional societies or community organizations.
+ Participate in activities that increase and promote justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, such as search advocate training, diversity training, anti-racism pedagogy, or mentoring students from underrepresented groups.
+ Participate in outreach and engagement activities related to the academic program.
What You Will Need
Minimum Qualifications for Both Ranks:
+ PhD in environmental sciences, environmental policy, environmental management, or a closely-related field.
+ Evidence of or commitment to excellence in inclusive teaching, mentoring, and/or student success.
+ Expertise in environmental assessment, monitoring, analysis, and/or compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

+ Demonstrated abilities in course design and curriculum development
+ Proven track record of excellence in teaching at the university level
What We Would Like You to Have
Preferred Qualifications for Both Ranks:
+ Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate courses in Environmental Sciences or related fields.
+ Demonstrated ability to teach across modalities, including online courses, and proficiency with online teaching platforms such as Canvas.
+ Experience leading or teaching groups in field settings.
+ Demonstrated ability to mentor or advise students, including working with underrepresented groups.
+ Experience and/or vision for incorporating high impact pedagogical practices into Environmental Sciences course design and teaching, including but not limited to experiential learning, community-engaged teaching, inquiry-based learning, and career integration.
+ Experience engaging on regulatory or planning issues with agencies, industry, consulting groups, tribal governments, community organizations, landowners, and/or other groups.
+ Expertise on relevant environmental laws and regulations (e.g. NEPA , Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Endangered Species Act, CERCLA , state laws, etc.).
+ Vision for a research program investigating relevant pedagogical or disciplinary topics, and which meaningfully engages undergraduates.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This position is located onsite in Corvallis, OR. The incumbent may work remotely as agreed upon with the supervisor, but is expected to be available for on-campus (face to face) teaching assignments and is required to hold on-campus office hours when teaching on-campus classes.
