4 Year Degree Under the general direction of the Head Athletic Trainer, the Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for the prevention, treatment, management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, the administration of the Shimano Training Room, the management of all NCAA and college policies related to sports medicine, insurance, and wellness education. This position will work August 1 – May 31.

Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Assessment, Treatment, & Referral of Athletic Injuries (85%)

Provide on field assessment and management of injuries during practices, home events, and occasional away contests.

Administer and supervise the daily treatments and rehabilitation to injured student-athletes.

Insure proper medical referrals to the Frederick Memorial Hospital, Wellness Center, and other health care providers.

Maintain accurate medical records of all student-athletes including records for athletic related injuries/illness for varsity student-athletes and approved club sport participants.

Determine level of participation for injured student-athletes and communicate with coaches regarding their injured students.

Facilitate relationships with local physicians and physical therapists for services for student-athletes.

Provide appropriate communication to other campus departments (Campus Safety, Dean of Students, Residence Life, etc.).

Provide appropriate communication to coaches, parents, insurance providers, and the NCAA in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

Verify student insurance, consent forms, emergency contacts and medical history in a timely manner.

Evaluate injury data for factors that would reduce the rate or severity of injury. Update the department emergency action plan annually.

Train the sports medicine staff to respond appropriately to emergencies.

Maintain records and procedures for AED housed in Shimano Training Room.

Facilitate Education Programs (15%)

Provide health related programming for student-athletes and the college community related to fitness, nutrition, alcohol and drug use, sexuality, and hazing.

Work in conjunction with the NCAA and other college administrators for grants and programming.

Act as a resource for student-athletes and other community members for health-related information.

Attend regional conferences related to wellness.

The employee must be able to effectively communicate with students, coaches, college administrators, and parents. A high level of independence and organization is required. Candidates must be available for weekend, evening, and early morning practices and events. The head athletic trainer will also need to be available during break sessions when classes are not scheduled.

Technology Skills

Strong computer proficiency in internet applications, SportsWare, Google System and Office Suite Productivity products (such as Microsoft Word, Excel & Powerpoint); and ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret medical documents and NCAA guidelines. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts timely and accurately, either manually or by using a calculator which apply to athletic trainers. Ability to apply concepts to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Applicant must meet the following criteria 1) be certified by NATABOC and 2) currently possess a Maryland State License from the Maryland Board of Physicians or be eligible to apply for said license. Certification in equivalent with ARC FA/CPR/AED and CPR/AED for the professional rescuer required. Certification from recognized fitness, strength, or conditioning association recommended.

The employee must also have at least two years of experience as a certified athletic trainer at the college level or equivalent combination of education and experience.
