Assistant Attorney General

Public Protection Advocacy Bureau

Privacy Responsible Technology Division

Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell is looking for an experienced civil litigator who is passionate about public service to join her office as an Assistant Attorney General in the Privacy Responsible Technology Division (PRTD). The Division, which is part of the Attorney General’s Public Protection Advocacy Bureau, investigates and litigates cutting-edge issues in emerging technologies to ensure compliance with consumer protection laws and regulations. The Division engages with the business and technology communities to encourage the protection of fundamental fairness; works to ensure equal access and opportunity for all residents of the Commonwealth; investigates and brings civil enforcement actions to address unfair or deceptive use of technology that may manipulate consumers, including youth; and protects consumer privacy.

Primary Duties: Independently, and as part of a team, conduct complex discovery, take and defend depositions, prepare and argue dispositive motions, draft pleadings and memoranda, and bring cases to trial. Duties also include learning new industries and technologies, investigating and identifying practices that may violate the law, collaborating with other state and federal enforcement entities, and negotiating resolutions that serve the public interest. There are also opportunities to assist in educational and policy work to protect privacy interests and prevent the unfair and deceptive use of technology.

Position Type: Full-Time/Exempt. Our current hybrid model includes some remote workdays for most positions.

Salary: $84,134 to $125,572, commensurate with JD year.

Location: This position may be based in the Boston Office or one of the AGO’s Regional offices located in Springfield, Worcester, and New Bedford. Office location will be determined based on the candidate’s expressed preference and space availability. For a candidate based in the Springfield, Worcester, or New Bedford Regional office, travel to the AGO’s Boston office is expected approximately one to three times per month.

Position Requirements: Massachusetts bar membership is required. At least five years of civil litigation experience, which may include judicial clerkships, is preferred. Trial experience and familiarity with Massachusetts consumer protection laws are also preferred, but not required. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a connection to the people and communities we serve, and an interest in supporting a respectful and inclusive work environment.

Applicants should have litigation experience that demonstrates the ability to conduct all phases of investigation and litigation, including managing electronic discovery, motion practice, and depositions. While expertise in matters concerning technology is not required, a candidate should demonstrate an eagerness and ability to learn complex concepts and effectively explain them to a court, jury, or the public. Clear and persuasive written and oral communication skills, legal research capabilities, and sound judgment and decision-making are imperative. Effective organizational skills, time management abilities, and attention to detail are also necessary to succeed in this role.
