Job Title Assistant Commandant Agency Texas A&M University at Galveston Department 10120918 Commandant Staff (James Gompper) Proposed Minimum Salary Commensurate Job Location Galveston, Texas Job Type Staff Job Description What we want The Assistant Commandant (AC) supports and assists the Commandant in all aspects of cadet life. S/he is responsible for leadership development and assessment, training cruise management, orientation, drug testing and resident hall management with particular attention to the military and maritime training aspects of the program providing leadership on a daily basis. The AC may assume the duties of the Commandant when required. What you need to know Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience. Required Education and Experience + Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. + Five years in leadership development program or any equivalent experience. Required Licenses and Certifications + Within 90 days of hire, must be able to obtain a TSA Transportation Workers Identification Credentials (TWIC). + Within 90 days of hire, must apply for and obtain a US Coast Guard-issued Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC). TAMMA will fund the application processes for the successful applicant. + Must possess a State of Texas Class C driver's license. Preferred Qualifications + Masters degree + Ten years sea going experience as a licensed officer on Merchant or Military vessel, or the equivalent experience. + Operational level US Coast Guard-issued STCW endorsement and a national endorsement as 3rd Mate or 3rd Engineer. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Excellent communication skills. Ability to interact with and lead college-aged women and men and a wide variety of individuals within and from outside the Academy and University. Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to assist in the revision and maintenance of documented conduct rules and procedures. Must have working computer skills including knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications. Strong analytical and decision-making skills. Essential Duties/Tasks: + LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND ASSESSMENT: The AC will engage with midshipmen to develop leadership values, coordinate leadership initiatives to support progressive Midshipman development & management skills and will monitor educational and training requirements. S/he will be attentive to the military and maritime training aspects of the Midshipman program. S/he will be responsible to evaluate and provide recommendations on Midshipman classification, promotion, award and discipline. This includes updating all documentation and systems as needed + TRAINING CRUISE MANAGEMENT: The AC must participate in Training cruise activities, including coordinating shipboard life and shore side activities during summer training cruises such as: leave & liberty privileges, recreational and cultural development activities, and unit scheduling that supports the watch standing, maintenance and class schedules. Training cruises typically last from 60-90 days. + RESIDENT HALL MANAGEMENT: The AC will monitor residence life, conduct room inspections and provide medical support as needed to on campus midshipmen. + DRUG TESTING: The AC will randomly conduct drug screening throughout the school year and on the training cruises to meet the Code of Federal Regulations per the US Coast Guard. + MIDSHIPMEN ORIENTATION: The AC will conduct new Midshipman orientations, screening and leadership retreats, parents briefings and other special activities as needed. This includes the admissions and orientation initiatives associated with Orientation Week (O-Week) for approximately 200 incoming freshmen.
