Position Summary:
The Assistant Controller position executes and may contribute to the development of strategic plans in accountability. The Assistant Controller acts as a bridge from senior management for translating higher-level strategies and goals into operating plans that drive the business. The manager is accountable for performance and to front line employees or project teams for guidance, motivation, and support. The Assistant Controller may act as people manager, project manager or program manager. The Assistant Controller is responsible for maintaining external relationships with vendors, partners and the community as needed.
Boundaries
The Assistant Controller is part of the finance team, a group of dedicated individuals who combine diligent work with camaraderie and passion for the Foundation’s mission. The accounting team is jointly responsible for accounting for over 1,000 funds, 120 investment managers, and a full complement of internal departments. The Assistant Controller reports to the Controller of The San Francisco Foundation.
Authority
This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations and to ensure the foundation’s financial transactions are recorded accurately, timely, and in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). It also maintains and reviews internal controls to ensure operational efficiency and adherence to policies and regulations.
Role
+ Manages monthly and quarterly closing schedules
+ Responsible for managing, mentoring, and developing direct reports
+ Manages weekly grants and accounts payable process, including checks, ACH, and wire transfer payments.
+ Manages ongoing treasury duties
+ Oversees and manages the interim and year-end audit, including the preparation and coordination of assigned audit schedules requested by auditors.
+ Prepares and coordinates the preparation of schedules and reports for annual Federal and state tax filings.
+ Manages quarterly tax accruals and estimated tax payments
+ Works with accounting staff to document processes, update as necessary, and make recommendations for improved procedures and controls
+ Collaborates with Philanthropy and Gift Planning personnel on gift and donor related matters and Grants Management personnel on grant processing and payment related inquiries
+ Assists with implementation of new financial systems as required
Tasks
+ Ensures that all general ledger transactions in Financial Edge are processed and recorded timely and accurately.
+ Reviews monthly and quarterly account reconciliations
+ Monitors integrations with Salesforce and Fluxx and work collaboratively to resolve issues
+ Monitors bank account activity in Wells Fargo CEO portal and manages positive pay and fraud alert functions
+ Manages payments through Wells Fargo Payment Manager system
+ Manages expense reimbursement and corporate credit card payment process through Concur in accordance with the Foundation’s travel and expense policy
+ Implements new invoice payment process through Concur Invoice Pay system
+ Other duties as assigned
Competencies & Qualifications
+ 5+ years directly related experience, including directing or assisting in the preparation of audit schedules and tax returns.
+ An undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance or related field is preferred
+ CPA or training towards a CPA preferred.
+ Previous supervisory experience or large team project management experience preferred.
+ High level of personal and professional integrity and ethics.
+ Ability to accurately manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
+ Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within and across a team-oriented, multi-departmental office environment with a high degree of professionalism.
+ Self-starter with the ability to work independently while keeping the Controller informed, as necessary.
+ Experience within a non-profit or philanthropic organization is a plus.
+ Experience with computerized fund accounting and donor management systems is a plus.
+ Familiarity with implementing accounting systems is a plus
+ Experience with automated expense and invoice workflow systems, such as Concur is a plus.
+ Requires in-depth knowledge of general accounting principles, reconciliations, and documentation techniques. Must manage, analyze, and summarize large amounts of data. Strong Excel skills are required.
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills, and attention to detail are a must.
+ Intermediate to advanced computer/software skills, including Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, & Teams) and Zoom.
+ Ability to learn, navigate and manage online platforms, including Qlik sense, Smartsheet, Salesforce, Blackbaud, Concur, and Adaptive Planning
+ Familiarity with AI software and capabilities is a plus

Compensation: The San Francisco Foundation offers a competitive total compensation package including base compensation in alignment with our organizational budget size and rich medical and fringe benefits offerings.
