Assistant Controller
Job Title: Assistant ControllerJob Description We are seeking a dedicated Assistant Controller to manage the accounting and financial reporting for our residential apartment portfolio. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting management and be committed to accuracy and detail. This role requires a proactive individual who can lead and mentor the accounting team, enforce accounting policies, and continuously seek improvements in processes and systems. Responsibilities + Manage the accounting and financial reporting for the residential apartment portfolio. + Lead and mentor the accounting team for residential apartments. + Ensure the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements for internal operations and external GAAP reporting. + Oversee the Affordable Housing portfolio, including reporting requirements for lenders, JV partners, and government entities. + Conduct detailed reviews of key financial statement activities. + Assist the VP of Accounting with consolidated and joint venture audit requests. + Review monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting packages for lenders and joint ventures. + Collaborate with operations and development teams to support ad hoc reporting and analysis needs. + Prepare and maintain property tax tracking schedules and manage the payment process. + Communicate month-end tasks and reporting with the operations team. + Enforce existing accounting policies and procedures and implement new policies as needed. + Work with the VP of Accounting on IT system rollouts and enhancements. + Continuously seek improvements in accounting processes, systems, and financial reporting. + Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of member capital statements and tax packages. Essential Skills + Proven experience as an Accounting Manager or in a similar role. + Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy. + Demonstrated leadership and team management skills. + Ability to facilitate collaborative interactions within and between departments. + Capable of independently planning and prioritizing multiple responsibilities to meet deadlines. + Adaptable to change with a positive and professional attitude. + Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Proficiency in reconciliations, month-end processes, financial statement preparation, financial reporting, journal entries, variance analysis, and general ledger management. + Experience with ERP systems such as Yardi is preferred but open to others. + Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables, lookups, and SUMifs. + Open to candidates with less than 5 years of experience if they have relevant experience. + A couple of years of public accounting experience combined with private accounting experience is highly preferred. + Experience in real estate, property management, REIT, or affordable housing is highly preferred but open to other industries. + A degree is required. Work Environment The role requires a flexible schedule with 2 days onsite and 3 days remote work. Candidates must be open to a fully onsite schedule if required in the future. The residential apartment portfolio consists of 12,000 units across 35 properties. The work environment values team players who are always looking for process improvement and can challenge the status quo. Performance is measured based on the ability to meet yearly goals reflective of company initiatives. Management experience is preferred, with direct oversight of 1 accounting manager and 4 property accountants.
