Assistant Controller
Position Summary: KQED is looking for a highly motivated, experienced and dynamic Assistant Controller to help scale a best in class public media organization. Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller will work closely with the Controller and senior leadership to manage accounting operations, ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including tax, and support strategic financial initiatives. To be successful in this role, you should possess strong technical accounting expertise and knowledge of US GAAP, preferably non-profit accounting and tax, excellent leadership skills and the ability to work cross-functionally. The ideal candidate should be comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment and work well with a diverse team (AP-AR-Reporting-General Ledger Accounting). This position will report into the Controller and will be based in San Francisco, CA (hybrid). This role will work hybrid between working in and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.   Salary Information: $131,900 - $164,000 Annually Essential Functions:  + Partner closely with the Controller, assisting in all areas of Controllership as well as any ad-hoc needs to support the team, cross-functional partners and/or new business initiatives. + Support the Controller in managing the accounting operations, general ledger and tax reporting. + Oversee the day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable and accounts receivable, and lead the execution of the month-end close process for the accounting team, including management of account reconciliations, bank reconciliation, month-end close tasks and fluctuation analyses. + Provide guidance to Revenue Accounting Manager regarding proper revenue recognition for all revenue streams:  gifts, grants, underwriting (customer credit analysis), exchange contracts, multiple deliverables including release of assets and related cash management. + Assist with review of external reports prepared by staff including but not limited to government reports for CPB’s annual CSG TV and FM grant applications; CSG Annual Financial Report for TV and FM; TV SABS and SAS reports for CPB and the 990 Tax Organizer Files and tax returns. + Assist the Controller in managing external auditor relationships to facilitate completion of audit and tax procedures in a timely and efficient manner. + Partner with other departments, including FP&A and Legal, to support business initiatives and ensure seamless collaboration on close activities and financial reporting and ensure alignment with financial reporting goals. + Champion automation and efficiency across the accounting team, bringing a fresh perspective on what best-in-class looks like. + Lead, mentor, and develop a team of accounting professionals, providing guidance on accounting issues; cultivate a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging process automation and the use of systems to drive efficiency. + Perform technical accounting research and provide technical guidance by documenting memos, as needed. + Lead system implementations or upgrades as needed to support accounting operations. + Internal control compliance and internal control policies and procedures and the risk and control self-assessment.  This includes the development of operational procedures and documentation of data flow + Review financial reporting of grants prepared by FP&A team + Other Finance and Accounting duties as assigned. Candidate qualifications: + Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field or equivalent work experience. + CPA or equivalent qualification preferred. + Minimum of 5+ years of relevant accounting experience, public/private accounting. + Experience in preparing tax filings  + Proficiency with ERP systems (Intacct – Workday adaptive) and advanced Excel skills. + A collaborative leadership style, strong coaching and mentorship skills, fostering a culture of continuous improvement at all levels. + Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively with different levels of employees across the organization. + Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills and able to handle complex accounting issues. + Superior organizational and project management skills, with a high attention to detail; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment. + Extensive experience in establishing and standardizing policies, process, procedures and controls using technology and best practices to improve efficiency and accuracy.
