Job Summary
A member of the senior staff of the College Academic Advising and Transfer Office (CAATO), the Assistant Dean and Assistant Director of the CAATO partners with colleagues in the College and across campus on issues broadly related to academic advising and the undergraduate student experience. The Assistant Dean/Assistant Director works closely with the Director to establish the visionary and strategic direction of the CAATO and to ensure office- and campus-wide initiatives are aligned with this direction and meet the goals of the strategic plan. This position develops a leadership training curriculum for the CAATO leadership team, establishes and maintains office policies, and liaises with campus partner offices and key stakeholders. In addition, this position supervises a group of advisers and manages a reduced advising caseload.
Responsibilities
Serves in a significant leadership role and represents the CAATO in the Director’s absence.Develops curriculum and programming for the CAATO leadership team to establish expectations aligned with the departmental mission and values; and provides a consistent, supportive supervisory experience for all staff.Supervises, supports, and provides feedback to a team of 5-6 academic advisers.Participates in leadership training programs to ensure alignment with office mission and values.Provides ongoing staff development around various issues as appropriate.Oversees the academic programs of a reduced caseload of undergraduate students and tracks progress toward degree completion.Utilizes academic advising theories and follows best practices to help students resolve challenges and achieve academic goals.Understands, interprets, and communicates University policies, procedures, and expectations.Refers students to campus resources, including Career Advancement, Study Abroad, Student Wellness, Center for College Student Success, College Student Care and Support Team, etc.Accesses information through various electronic databases.Maintains student records in compliance with applicable laws and policies.Develops staff development programs that educate the staff in the full range of information they must know--curricular, campus resources, developmental issues facing the college-aged population, psychological issues, financial aid policies, etc.Manages advisors who handle discipline cases and student problems and crises. Recommends effective advising strategies for these students.Performs other related work as needed.

Bachelor’s degree.Advanced degree strongly preferred, with a 6-year minimum gap between date of college graduation and appointment.Experience:
Minimally seven years professional work experience in higher education.Specialized knowledge of college student development and event planning.Technical Skills or Knowledge:
Proficiency in Mac and PC environments.Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and online organizational tools.Familiarity with Adobe graphic design/web development environments.Preferred Competencies
