Assistant Director, Communications

JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Director/Communications is responsible for developing and executing the Lottery’s media relations and external communications plans, which complement the Lottery’s marketing strategy, to positively position the Lottery brand, build awareness of the Lottery’s mission, and promote the Lottery’s games through all available forms of media. They will identify and share Lottery success stories, accomplishments and initiatives to raise the Lottery’s visibility and promote the Lottery’s value proposition with existing and potential players, Lottery retailers, key business partners, and the general public. They will field and fulfill requests from a variety of external constituencies, including local and national media, lottery trade publications, state and municipal officials, business partners, and customers. This position will report to the Chief iLottery Officer while also collaborating with the Chief Marketing Officer.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Develop key messages and draft/edit press releases, media alerts, winner stories, statements, talking points, presentations and pitchesEnsure messaging is consistent with Lottery brand and mission, and is easily understood by a variety of constituencies/audiencesSchedule media opportunities and the coordination of major press announcements with the Lottery’s Executive Director and the Office of the State TreasurerServe as the lead contact for all media seeking comment or information from the Lottery, researching and responding to inquiries in a timely mannerDevelop and maintain relationships with key reporters and journalists across all media, notably in-state and industry trade outletsServe as a Lottery spokespersonOversee public records requests, ensuring each is fulfilled in a timely and complete mannerManage and present accurate and timely information during and following crisis situationsPrepare Executive Director’s report for presentation at monthly MSLC meetingReview social media content prior to posting for accuracy and sensitivityPost social media content on occasion when Social Media Coordinator is unavailableDraft messaging for customer- and retailer-facing staff membersMonitor and oversee responses to user-generated content and inquiries through multiple channels, including social media and the Lottery’s website and mobile appAssist Marketing team in drafting and proofreading promotional messagingAssist digital operations team with editorial content management of websitePlay a leading role in the Lottery’s responsible gambling initiativesWork with the Assistant Director of Stakeholder Engagement, the Product and Promotional Development Managers, Marketing Specialists, Regional Managers, and other Lottery team members with planning, executing, attending and participating in on-site and off-site player activation, sponsorship and outreach events.Perform related duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to work nights and weekends when needed.Must have a valid driver’s license with ability to drive throughout the Commonwealth.

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or related work experienceMinimum of 5 years of experience in corporate communicationsExperience developing and executing all-encompassing communications strategies that include all channels of communication for external audiencesExpertise in message development and executionExpertise in executing press conferences and media/special eventsExcellent grammar, composition, and proofreading skillsStrong verbal communications skillsExperience with customer or constituent services, or other related experienceExperience handling public records requestsSkilled in managing and navigating social media channels, including utilization of social media management platforms (e.g. HootSuite)Ability to navigate business intelligence platforms and produce data reports in Excel formatKnowledge of Lottery products, procedures and operationsExperience adhering to a brand style guideMust be organized and detail orientedExcellent attendance and punctuality
