No Duties and Responsibilities The Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services is a full-time, professional position within ISSS , an area within the Office of Global & Community Engagement. The Assistant Director performs a variety of duties in direct support of international students, staff, and scholars across Loyola University Chicago’s three Chicagoland campuses. This individual will be expected to be available to international faculty and staff at all campuses, primarily by video, phone, and e-mail, but also in person. While this position will be based at Lakeshore Campus occasional visits to the Health Sciences Division (Maywood) Campus and Water Tower Campus will be required. As a staff member in a high-traffic, multi­function office, this position also involves support of new initiatives and additional responsibilities as assigned. Essential Job Functions: Immigration and Advising: Provides immigration support to all J-1 students and scholars (Exchange Visitor), 0-1 (Extraordinary Ability), TN (Canadian or Mexican National}, and H1-B (temporary worker) visa holders. Serves as Alternate Responsible Officer ( ARO ) of the University’s J-1 Exchange Visitor Program, including the preparation of Forms DS-2019 (Certificate of Eligibility) and all related J-1 advising. Serves as Designated School Official ( DSO ) for F-1 Students and assists ISSS Advisors with regulatory guidance and institutional policy. Acts as the coordinator for H-1B, 0-1, and TN petitions on behalf of Loyola University Chicago as well as petitions on behalf of Loyola University Medical Center for clinical faculty; files all petitions and extensions through Loyola’s approved external immigration counsel. Coordination and Communication: Serves as a liaison between ISSS , the designated external immigration counsel Loyola host departments, international faculty and staff, and other external constituents. Provides initial support for visa sponsorship requests; assists with departmental needs and questions related to immigration and sponsorship; collaborates with international faculty/staff and University attorney in preparing immigration petitions. Acts as main point of contact for inbound J-1 students; oversees the J-1 exchange program, U.S. Europe Double Degree program, and J-1 intern program. Administration: Ensures compliance with all applicable federal laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to international students, faculty, and staff. Alleviates routine administrative demands of the Director (i.e. SEVIS registration, collection of program data for I-20/DS-2019 issuance, SIS changes). Ensures proper compliance with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System ( SEVIS ); assists in the preparation of reports including statistical data on international faculty, staff, and scholars, audits, and on-site reviews as required; provides expertise and backup support as needed to ISSS . Assists the Director of Global Initiatives and Institutional Relations in the development and support of the new resource center for inbound exchange students. This position will serve as the primary immigration resource for this population and will work collaboratively across offices in Global Engagement as part of this responsibility. It does not change reporting lines to the Director of ISSS , nor does the position have direct reports associated with this role. Programming: Assists in the creation and implementation of programming for international students, scholars, staff and faculty, including orientation, cross-cultural adaptation, themed workshops, International Education Week events, and other activities. Collaborates with colleagues across campuses to provide services and advocacy for international students, faculty, staff and scholars. Minimum Education and/or Work Experience Qualifications U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency is required, as mandated by the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State. Master’s Degree with five years of related experience in international student, faculty, and staff immigration case management required. Ability to understand and interpret complex principles and regulations related to F-1, J-1, H-1B, 0, and TN visas. Demonstrated cross-cultural sensitivity; history of working with diverse international populations. Excellent problem solving, organizational skills and attention to detail and ability to prioritize competing deadlines. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Ability to contribute to the completion of a broader and more complex organization or program projects and goals. Ability to analyze and address problems using reasoning and the interpretation and application of theories and principles to develop and recommend alternatives and best course actions. Preferred Qualifications: Extensive experience working with F-1, J-1, H-1B, 0, and/or TN visas. Experience working with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services ( USCIS ) regulations governing non-immigrant students and/or foreign workers. Experience working with international students, faculty, and/or staff. Experience living, studying, or working overseas. Certificates/Credentials/Licenses U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency is required for authorization by the Department of Homeland Security as a Designated School Official ( DSO ) and by the Department of State as an Alternate Responsible Officer ( ARO ). Computer Skills Overall strong computer skills and the ability to learn position-specific student information systems (e.g. SEVIS , LOCUS , Terra Dotta, etc.).
