Job Summary

The Assistant Director for Security and Law Enforcement Technology is responsible for the day-to-day management of all departmental technology operations, including access control systems, security cameras and license plate readers, alarm systems, and other technology related to law enforcement. This position reports to the Director of Security and Law Enforcement Technology. This position also supervises direct reports including the Manager of Business Applications and the Security Systems Lead.

Responsibilities

Oversees, develops, and evaluates the daily operational performance management of security and law enforcement systems and technology.Coordinates with senior management staff and cross-functional support teams to assess security protocols and develop comprehensive strategies for enhancing organizational goals and departmental best practices.Ensures that various dashboards regarding system and operational status are maintained for accuracy.Prepares and presents regular status updates related to key projects, initiatives, and staff assignments.Oversees the daily operational management of department applications and related software.Develops a strong working knowledge of clients' and users' areas of responsibility and technology needs.Ensures clients and end-users are provided best in class professional, courteous and timely support and service in accordance with the operational mission of the Department, ensuring customer satisfaction and quality assurance for all services rendered.Evaluates and analyzes the operational performance of University of Chicago security systems and technology to ensure high levels of service are provided, and all appropriate standards are being met.Identifies and resolves problems critical to the operation of the Department. Meets with other administrators and professional staff to discuss issues, causes, and strategies.Directly manages and supervises the security operations team, assigning work activities, projects, and programs to appropriate staff members, reviewing and evaluating the effectiveness of current work projects and methods.Completes performance evaluations for direct reports.Assesses training needs and requirements related to the Department's security and law enforcement systems.Ensures that team members provide in-service training programs for end-users of security system technologies.Develops training plans for new staff within Security Systems.Works with system vendors' technical support to troubleshoot and resolve problems or address system improvements in support of the systems in use by the Department.Provides 24/7 technical support for security and law enforcement systems.Assists with the management of security systems projects at the University of Chicago.Reviews proposals and oversees projects to ensure technical and departmental requirements are met while monitoring time and expenditures to ensure projects and budgets meet established targets.Ensures that projects meet clients' and users' needs and expectations of quality and functionality.Collaborates with Director of Security and Law Enforcement Technology and the Assistant Vice President for Campus Safety andv Strategic Initiatives to develop and maintain business continuity plans for technology used to support critical police operations.Collaborates with Director of Security and Law Enforcement Technology and the Assistant Vice President for Campus Safety and Strategic Initiatives in developing short- and long-term phased law enforcement technology strategic plans and establishes priorities regarding system upgrades, integration, projects, and hardware and software procurement.Collaborates with Director of Security and Law Enforcement Technology and the Assistant Vice President for Campus Safety and Strategic Initiatives in developing, implementing, and reviewing security technology policies, procedures, and design standards to ensure consistency with industry best practices and contemporary standards.Provides guidance in the development of RFP and contract specifications for hardware, software, and other security or law enforcement-related systems.Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the Department of Safety and Security Divisions, other key campus partners, including IT Services and Facilities Services, and external partners and vendors.Supports University of Chicago Information Technology standards and security policies.Ensures that proper inventory records are maintained for departmental technology assets.Manages and supports Security and Law Enforcement technology infrastructure, including monitoring system health, database management, endpoint device support, and application updates.Ensures the implementation of approved best practices and information technology policies that result in the highest quality systems administration.Manages the creation of standards and procedures to maintain production servers that run the operating system. Manages the installation, configuration, and maintenance of operating systems and utility software.Provides expertise in planning and installing necessary patches and upgrades for servers and their associated storage, network, communications, and peripheral sub-systems. Installs and maintains an appropriate level of intrusion detection, monitoring, and auditing software as required.Tracks compliance and maintains documentation for hardware, software, and service inventories for management reports.Ensures that team addresses customer needs in accordance with quality assurance standards. Participates in the design and management of security systems projects at the University.Meets and works with Divisions/Schools/Centers, facilities services, and contract management teams to provide guidance on security technology matters.Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Bachelor's degree.

Experience:

Supervisory experience in a public safety environment, preferably in a university setting.Working in a campus public safety or campus law enforcement environment.

Certifications:

Valid driver's license that grants reciprocity in the State of Illinois or is eligible to obtain one and do so within 60 days of appointment.Successful completion, annually, of a Department, authorized and approved in-service training course consisting of at least twenty hours of instruction.Successfully complete a background investigation with no prior criminal convictions that would prohibit the individual from meeting the standards set forth by the State of Illinois to become a law enforcement officer.Successfully complete/pass medical examinations, including vision screening and drug testing, psychological test, and physical fitness tests.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

Knowledge of organizational staffing and human resources.Knowledge of basic financial management methods, techniques, and procedures.Knowledge of EEO/Affirmative Action guidelines for recruitment, selection, and promotion.
