Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The Undergraduate Research, Scholarship & Creativity Office (URSCO), which is part of Lloyd International Honors College, supports undergraduate research and its associated activities at the University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG). URSCO serves as the central coordinating office for student and faculty development workshops, the Carolyn and Norwood Thomas Undergraduate Research and Creativity Expo, and various programs (including STAMPS, U-RISE, and Research Fellows) that financially support undergraduate students engaged in research activities, including travel and conference presentations. There are approximately 100 students and 20 faculty from various schools and offices on campus that this office supports through internal and external grants. The URSCO budget comprises over 10 funds, three overhead funds, and one state fund with a total annual budget of about $500,000. Position Summary The primary purpose of the URSCO Program Specialist is to work with the URSCO Faculty Director and will help manage the daily operations of the office, as well as handling academic enhancement coordination for UNCG’s U-RISE program. Duties include grant management, inventory control, event planning, supervision of student workers, and faculty coordination. This position acts as the primary point of contact for faculty, students and other offices on campus, and performs other duties as specified by the Faculty Director of URSCO. The Program Specialist exercises a great deal of independence in performing the position’s associated duties. Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree, at least three years of administrative experience in higher education, teaching experience and experience working with grant-funded projects. Percentage Of Time 25 Key Responsibility Undergraduate Research Program Management Essential Tasks Manage collection and compilation of proposals for review by the appropriate committees including confirmation of student information in Banner and InfoReady. Serve as application coordinator to review applications and select students as they relate to meeting the business practices and procedures outlined in the application process. Monitor all ongoing activities and procedures for compliance with policies and procedures and recommend/implement changes as needed. Advise students and oversee completion and receipt of various forms from students for each academic year. Develop, compile, and analyze statistics on awards for year-end reports. Transfer information to electronic format by data entry. Oversee the creation and management of databases to enter department/program information for URCA proposals, payroll, and demographics. Manage and coordinate travel and presentation programs for undergraduate research assistantships funded by URSCO. Assist Faculty Director in promoting and selecting students for prestigious fellowships such as Goldwater, Udall, and CLS. Percentage Of Time 25 Key Responsibility Academic Enhancement Coordinator for U-RISE Essential Tasks Coordinate recruitment activities to attract potential U-RISE candidates. Process applications, arrange interviews, and onboard newly selected U-RISE students. Schedule meetings, oversee logistics for both internal and external participants, and organize community engagement experiences. Coordinate professional development workshops, responsible conduct of research (RCR) trainings, and extracurricular student activities. Arrange for travel of U-RISE program directors and students to conferences. Coordinate on-campus and external summer research experiences to provide students with valuable learning opportunities. Monitor the grant budget, submission and tracking of purchases, and inventory. Maintain the program website, social media sites, and an alumni database. Assist in preparing annual U-RISE grant progress reports (RPPR). Facilitate workshops with URSCO Faculty Director or affiliated faculty members. Percentage Of Time 25 Key Responsibility Events and Publicity Management Essential Tasks Coordinate publicity for community and regional events – SNCURCS, SURF, campus-wide research showcase, NCUR meeting. Arrange room and food setups for all events. Arrange travel reservations and reimbursements for faculty, staff, and incoming speakers or participants. Coordinate scheduling and publicity for campus events including workshop series. Schedule internal meetings. Compose and manage communication for various purposes for URCA applicants, workshop attendees, and committee members. Create announcements and flyers for general distribution. Draft, proofread, and edit documents for the office. Supervision of URSCO student workers and URCA Awardees. Point of contact for Research Fellows and Artists in Residence. Plan and direct the work of others.
