Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Assistant Director-Coding.

In this role, the successful candidate Oversees coding operations of the HIM Department for NYU Langone Health and guides the efficient and effective process for coding, abstracting, and data reporting of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, ancillary and oncology services.
Responsible for the managing the daily operations of the Coding Department and guiding the efficient and effective process for coding, abstracting, and data reporting of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and ancillary services. Provides leadership for both internal and remote coding staff with training, coding compliance reviews, regulatory guidance, work distribution, and monitoring of accounts receivable issues related to coding. Serves as a key participant in the revenue cycle process. Works closely with Patient Financial Services (PFS), Clinical Documentation Improvement Program and other services to assist and/or coordinate in resolving account, coding, and charge capture issues. Works with members of the medical staff to ensure documentation is complete for accurate and timely coding of records. Manages the conversion of clinical documentation into data and information and the reporting of this coded data to internal users such as Patient Financial Services, Patient Admitting Services, Finance, and external agencies such as IPRO, MedReview, NYCHPRO and other agencies as required. Manages and coordinates all coding related system and software implementations and updates. Ensures that coding practices and processes comply with applicable regulatory guidelines and requirements. Participates in the special projects when necessary.

Job Responsibilities:

Manages coding and abstracting functions and charge entry in designated outpatient areas on a daily basis and monitors Discharged Not Final Billed (DNFB) in order to maintain best practice level, which leads to a positive impact on the overall revenue cycle. Manages the daily operations an activities in the coding section to ensuring accurate and timely coding of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and ancillary services.Provides leadership and expertise in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and CPT-4 coding systems as well as MS-DRG, NYS DRG, APC and APG. Provides leadership and expertise in data quality and reporting. Manages the conversion of clinical documentation into meaningful data and information and reporting these data to internal and external users. Understands the general flow of health information from discharge, coding, billing and data reporting. Implements efficient workflows and practices.In collaboration with the Director of Coding and CDI Initiatives develops and maintains coding and documentation quality and compliance program. Ensures that coding process and guidelines meet State and Federal requirements and standards. Works with the medical staff to continuously improve clinical documentation to facilitate accurate coding. Enforces the use of physician query when appropriate.Provides consultative advice to outpatient and ancillary departments as well as Patient Financial Services regarding their coding questions and needs. Meets performance standards by setting goals and objectives, prioritizing work, and using available resources efficiently and effectively.Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field of Coding and Reimbursement by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.Supervises and ensures productivity, turn-around-time, and quality of work are met. Addresses personnel, production and system issues as they arise. Delegates work to staff and escalate issues as necessary. Retains appropriate work and responsibilities for self. Directs the training of new employees and ensure ongoing training of all staff. Conducts performance appraisal reviews and routine assessment of staff competency providing timely and appropriate feedback. Takes appropriate organization, system and personnel actions as necessary. Supervises staff in area of responsibility; initiates disciplinary action, including terminations; carries out annual performance appraisal of employees recommending promotions, raises, etc.Establishes work schedule for area of responsibility and assigns tasks; ensures that work is completed accurately and according to schedule. Ensures adequate staff coverage by coordinating the vacation and holiday schedules; approves overtime as necessary and arranges coverage for absent staff; maintains employee attendance records (including vacation time, sick days).Prepares written documentation required by administration, departmental leadership, Finance Department and 3rd party payors. Monitors coding for quality control by randomly scanning coding worksheets and corrections identified by computerized edit.Collects, analyzes, assigns, and sequences all codes for diseases, operations, newborns, and complications for each patient discharge according to latest coding system.Acts as liaison with hospital personnel and outside agencies on code assignments and resolves operational problems.Provides support and advice to LOH Director of HIM and coding staff. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Manages other assignments and projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelors Degree Required.
Coding certification (CCS) required
Graduation from an accredited Medical Record Technician program with Credentials (RHIT) or BS degree with minimum of 8 years of coding experience
5 years of management experience
Good oral and written communication skills
Good interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) credential is strongly preferred
MS or Post Baccalaureate degree in Health Informatics strongly preferred
Experience working in the teaching hospital/academic medical center strongly preferred

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $146,384.38 - $183,750.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
