Description

The Assistant Director EHSO and Occupational Health will manage the overall Occupational Health and Safety Program at the Emory National Primate Research Center.  The program includes the oversight of occupational health, biosafety, chemical safety, and radiation safety.  Will work with University EHSO to implement mandated Federal and State laws, regulations, and guidelines. 

 

The preferred candidate will have a strong background in Occupational Health with Master’s degree in nursing, public health or other appropriate science-related field and a minimum of 7 years' experience. Skills obtained as a healthcare provider are highly beneficial and desired.

KEY RESPONSIBILTIES:

Develops, implements, and maintains comprehensive Environmental Occupational Health and Safety (EHS) policies and programs to support operations within Emory University and to comply with applicable laws and regulations. Ensures that EHS programs under their responsibility are in line with the department and university's vision and are integrated with, fully cooperative and in harmony with the other programs within the Environmental Health and Safety Office. Serves as a professional resource on EHS issues. Frequent interaction and information sharing with other Assistant Directors/Managers is essential.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS PROVIDED BY THE EMORY PRIMATE CENTER:

Manages the EPC EHS office, supervises, hires, and evaluates staff within the department. Conducts hazard risk assessments and provides oversight for activities involving infectious agents, biosafety/animal biosafety level 3 containment, recombinant DNA, radioactive isotopes, and hazardous chemicals at EPC.Participates in National Primate Research Centers Occupational Health and Safety NIH Consortium.Assist in preparation of relevant areas of EPC base grant submission and AAALAC program description.Works closely with the Emory University office of Occupational Health as well as the Infectious Disease physician to provide onsite care for occupational exposures, illnesses, and injuries. Provides exposure, illness, and injury reports to the EPC safety committee.Provides oversight for the center wide Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and is a member of the SOP committee. Works closely with the Division of Animal Resources, Administration and Research partners and counterparts throughout the organization to generate and manage a comprehensive occupational health and safety program. Represents the EPC Occupational Health and Safety office at the university and the health and safety community.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct on-site occupational health and safety risk assessments.Facilitate exposure response program and follow up with risk assessment.Collaborates with Infectious Disease MD to provide post exposure prophylaxis and follow up.Track and trend EPC employee incidents and evaluate trends.Oversees immunization assessments, (i.e., vaccinia, yellow fever, Hepatitis B).Oversees hazard exposure monitoring and reporting (i.e., isoflurane, ETO, hearing, formaldehyde).

PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in nursing, public health or other appropriate science-related field and/or an equivalent combination of education training and experience. Supervisory experience.Seven years' experience in management of EHS professional and technical staff or equivalent combination of experience, education and training is accepted.Preferred Professional board certification:Nurse (RN) - Most PreferredAdvanced Practice Nurse (NP)Physician Assistant (PA)Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree or higher in environmental engineering, public health, occupational health and safety or other appropriate science-related field of study (i.e., chemistry) required.Seven years' experience in management of EHS professional and technical staff or equivalent combination of experience, education and training is accepted.Professional Board Certification preferred. Examples include: CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) CHP (Certified Health Physicist)CSP (Certified Safety Professional)BSP (Biosafety Professional)CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager)PE (Professional Engineer), etc.

COMPENSATION: 

Annualized Salary: Minimum $83,700, Mid-Point $116,300, Maximum $149,200.
