Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit Student Support Services (SSS) is a TRIO-grant support program designed to maximize academic performance for UNCG students who are first-generation, from modest income backgrounds, or who have a disability, and who also demonstrate academic need for services. Position Summary The Assistant Director for Academic and Personal Advising coordinates all aspects of supplemental advising services for students in the SSS program, including academic, graduate school, career, and mental health topics. The Assistant Director carries out duties as a student advisor and advocate, as well as a supervisor of the peer mentoring program and advising component Graduate Assistant. The Assistant Director works closely with the rest of the TRIO team to advise and support the 200+ students enrolled in the SSS program. Employee will plan and participate in student events and college tours in NC and outside NC. This travel may require driving students in rental vehicles. Minimum Qualifications The candidate must have a Master’s degree in community, school, or college counseling. Additionally, the candidate must have at least 2 years of direct advising/counseling experience, preferably in education. The candidate should have some experience or be familiar with the unique challenges facing first-generation college students. Number of Months per Year 12 FLSA Exempt Key Responsibilities ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Percentage Of Time 60% Key Responsibility Advising Essential Tasks Orients new students to the advising component; conducts individual sessions with students regarding academic, career, graduate school, and mental health concerns on a regular basis and builds an action plan for the student to accomplish over the course of the semester or academic year. Provides graduate and professional school guidance, including workshops, and visits to graduate schools and programs across the state. Provides academic advising to assist students with course schedules, graduation plans, academic policy concerns, course withdrawals, grade replacements, major/minor changes, and academic appeals. Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility Graduate Assistant Supervision Essential Tasks Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a graduate assistant to provide instructional sessions to students in the program and to develop group workshops and presentations for students in SSS. Plan, coordinate, and lead trips with students. Capacity to travel (air/land) day, overnight, and/or weekends as required by the program’s function. Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility Career Readiness Essential Tasks Collaborates with the Career and Professional Development office to provide customized workshops to SSS students to prepare for job applications, career fairs, and interviews. Creates programming to assist students in developing clear paths for career readiness. Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility Peer Mentor Program Essential Tasks Oversees the Peer mentor program; hires, trains, and manages a team of 3-4 mentors each year; oversees mentor/mentee matches; provides professional development opportunities to mentors. Hires, trains, and supervises Graduate Assistant. Percentage Of Time 20% Key Responsibility Database Management and Staff Training Essential Tasks Serve as the primary manager for the BLUMEN database system (the new TRIO database system), ensuring accurate data entry, maintenance, and compliance with TRIO program requirements. Oversee the tracking and documentation of TRIO student engagement, including contact logs and program participation records. Utilize BLUMEN’s email marketing tools to develop and execute targeted communication campaigns to support student outreach and program goals. Provide training and technical support to TRIO staff on effective use of BLUMEN, ensuring consistent and accurate data entry and reporting practices.
