Date of Appointment: As soon as possible but negotiable Context of the Job Under the direction of the Senior Associate Director for Residence Life and Housing, the Assistant Director strives to develop cohesive, safe, and positive residence hall communities; manages response to student conduct in the residence halls; leads initiatives to improve community standards and community health; and serves as student and staff advocate for the purpose of enhancing the operations, programs, services, and student retention of a residence hall system. Serves as a member of the department's leadership team initiating strategic planning and organizational leadership to facilitate the development of the overall operation including engagement of students in educational opportunities that exist to build community and develop citizenship and leadership; support student success; and contribute to the achievement of SUNY Oswego's academic mission and strategic planning goals. Acts decisively and diplomatically to advance and protect departmental and University relations in resolving situations that are unique, controversial, or not fully resolved by hall staff. Serves as a champion for the student experience in the residence halls through all areas of responsibility. Description of Responsibilities: Administrative Leadership + As a member of the department's leadership team, works to formulate departmental policy and practices. Engages in the development of department-wide goals and assists with the development of the long range strategic plan. Engage in policy formulation and implementation. Develop and present trend analysis reports, emerging national issues in areas of student concerns and best practices, annual and on-going staff development and training in all areas of functional responsibility. + Provide indirect supervision and direction to 2 Embedded Counselors and 8 professional hall staff in functional areas of student behavior response and problem resolution, and resolving living climate concerns. + Work closely with the Residence Life and Housing leadership team to address initiatives and impacts on the student experience. + Serve in an advanced capacity as a Student Conduct Hearing Officer for the University conduct system and render educational and corrective sanctions for violations of university policies. Residential Behavior Case Management and Crisis Response + Review and process all incident reports and police reports related to residence hall students. Make decisions and direct staff response about appropriate course of action, response and adjudication of incidents. Collaborate with RLH professional staff to take corrective action to remedy procedural and reporting errors. + Coordinate department response to significant crisis situations through facilitation of Residence Life & Housing staff response to campus-wide weekday and evening serious crisis situations including those that are life-threatening by assuming campus-wide emergency 24-hour "on-call" responsibilities on a rotating basis and collaboration with the Student Conduct office to train Residence Life & Housing Staff and provide direction and support to staff responding to student issues both informally and through the University conduct system. + Respond to student and parent concerns and work with the Office of Student Conduct, the Counseling Center, and Health Services to address student needs that are beyond the Residence Life & Housing infrastructure. Coordinate behavior responses with the Dean of Students and/or Office of Student Conduct where appropriate. Support department responses to high-level crisis situations such as student death, major health and safety issues or contagious illness concerns. + Develop a student behavior follow up protocol and documentation to be carried out by the Assistant Directors and hold professional staff accountable to protocol. Work directly with the office of the Dean of Students to provide updates and comprehensive support to frequently documented residence hall students to ensure standards of behavior within the residence halls that foster the growth and development of our students. + Alert the Assistant Vice President for Residence Life and Housing and the Senior Associate Director for Residence Life in the event of repeated concerns. Serve on the Student Behavior Intervention Team. Student Education and Advocacy + Develop and implement initiatives and strategies to develop strong, positive and safe communities in the residence halls. Offer guidance to staff in response to community challenges. Represent the department on university and division wide committees designed to respond and update policies related to incidents of bias. + Work closely with the University Police Department and the Bias Related Prevention Team to address any concerns of bias and investigate violations to community standards that create a hostile climate for students in the residence halls. + Coordinate sexual assault prevention, alcohol and other drug education and other health and wellness education efforts for residence hall students with the Associate Director for Residential Education. + Work with the Associate Director of Operations to improve operational and administrative functions of daily residence hall management to enhance the student experience. + Identify and implement strategic initiatives identified in the department educational priority, strategic plan, and mission, vision, and values related to student support and advocacy. Community and Staff Advocacy + Coordinate assessment to broadly analyze and to respond to student needs, chronic concerns, and challenges within the residence hall specifically addressing sense of safety, residential conduct process, peer accountability, and sense of belonging. + Engage in annual facility review with Associate Director for Operations and in-hall professional staff to ensure an inclusive climate and space allocation encouraging academic success. + Assist in the recruitment and selection of all levels of department staff. Serve on search committees for positions in collaborating departments. + Perform other related duties as assigned. Job Requirements: Required: + Master's degree in Higher Education, counseling, or related field. + 3-5 years of professional experience working with college students. + Strong knowledge of student development theory. + Experience in student support programs and services, crisis intervention techniques, and conflict resolution + Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. + Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Preferred: + Experience serving on a Behavioral Intervention Team + Knowledge of residence life and student personnel administration; and conduct issues and practice. + Experience in emergency planning and response. + Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. + Ability to analyze problems and strategically develop and communicate creative solutions to complex issues. + Ability to develop, plan, and implement short and long-range goals. + Skills in organization, coordination and oversight of multiple priorities.
