Job Overview

The Assistant Director of Development (ADoD) - a key member of the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) Development team - is responsible for increasing the number and level of donors and philanthropic partnerships in support of cancer research at Georgetown, and other Medical Center-wide priorities as part of the institution’s ambitious and exciting campaign, Called to Be.

A significant part of the Assistant Director’s role is focused on the qualification of prospective new donors, with a particular focus on cultivating and soliciting gifts up to $50,000. In a highly collaborative role, the ADoD works with multiple internal and external stakeholders; Georgetown Lombardi and broader Georgetown University academic leaders, faculty, clinicians, researchers and volunteers to design and implement strategic annual fundraising plans to support key priorities. The ADoD will knowledgeably and articulately communicate the case for support; effectively identify, cultivate and solicit potential donors, and work closely with colleagues across Advancement; in the annual fund, donor relations, stewardship, event planning, and prospect research teams.


With an annual set of metrics, with a particular focus on dollars-raised, they visit and ask, and maintain a portfolio of individual and select corporate/foundation prospects and donors, and work collaboratively with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital colleagues as part of Georgetown’s philanthropic partnership with MedStar Health. They help to advance the mission of Georgetown Lombardi through outreach, awareness, and pipeline engagement and growth - and a portion of their role centers around grateful patient fundraising, in partnership with MedStar Health.

In addition to their portfolio work, the ADoD may lead the strategy and execution of key special events aimed to engage donors and deepen their connection with Georgetown Lombardi over time, serving as important cultivation and stewardship opportunities. They apply their ability to build an effective fundraising program for Georgetown Lombardi priorities from baseline without the benefit of an alumni-based constituency and work with Georgetown’s Annual Giving team to put together direct mail strategies and conduct thoughtful analysis of pipeline development.

They perform other duties as periodically assigned by SDOD and/or GUMC Advancement leadership and - as appropriate - may be engaged with new or emerging programs and initiatives.

The ADoD is necessarily enthusiastic and eager to take on special projects as they arise in order to continue to build and create fundraising momentum and philanthropic pipeline.


Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, Georgetown Lombardi, the ADoD works closely with fellow Medical Center and regional development officers, faculty, staff, and lead volunteers. As well, they liaise with appropriate advancement services units within the Office of Advancement of Georgetown University; and interacts daily with donors, prospects, and GU-wide faculty, staff and administration.

Requirements and Qualifications

Bachelor’s degreeAt least 2 years of progressively responsible development experience - preferably in science or medical-related fundraising field, including volunteer management and solicitation experienceExcellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skillsKnowledge of or ability to learn an array of medical specialties and disciplines in the basic science area/ strong computer skills, including all Microsoft applications as well as proficiency using fundraising and prospect/donor management softwareFlexibility, initiative, self-discipline, attention to detail, and ability to lead, motivate, and work collaboratively with others both internal and external to the institution

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$54,616.00 - $100,493.33

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
