Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Student Engagement, the Assistant Director of Greek Life is a professional staff member within the Center for Student Involvement who works directly with Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL/Greek Life) leadership development and serves as the foremost advocate for the fraternity and sorority experience on both the Montclair and Bloomfield campuses.

The Assistant Director of Greek Life leads an office supporting the approximately 5% of undergraduate students who are members of one of the University's 30+ Greek-letter organizations, 6 sub-councils, as well as the Greek-letter organizations and social fellowships on the Bloomfield campus. This position focuses on the areas of leadership development, student support, advising, team building, member development, conduct, risk management, and responsible self-governance.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides leadership, guidance, and support to the 40+ Greek Letter organizations and unaffiliated organizations recognized by the Center for Student Involvement and Center for Student Leadership and Engagement on both the Montclair and Bloomfield campuses and develop and articulate a strategic vision for the Greek Life community on both campuses in alignment with the university's mission and values.

As the spokesperson for the Office of Greek Life, the Assistant Director will serve as the University liaison for meetings with Inter/National staff liaisons when on campus, as well as with campus partners (Alumni, Communications, Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, etc.).

Assists in University and Department-wide events (Open House, Accepted Students Days, New Student Orientation, Commencement, Red Hawk Day/Carnival, Red Hawk Night, Homecoming, etc).

Oversees membership recruitment, New Member, Intake Processes, including extension/expansion and coordinate and lead Greek Life trainings, Greek advisor trainings, Leadership Team training, in-services, and workshops, including hazing prevention workshops such as hazing prevention, new member education, recruitment, sexual violence prevention, social practice, risk reduction and other/similar programs.

Hires, trains and supervise two graduate coordinators and one intern for the summer, fall, and/or spring and serves as the Montclair liaison for Bloomfield campus Greek Advisor(s).

Maintains accurate demographic, statistical, and academic performance information regarding Greek Life and maintains accurate and current records of membership, conduct matters, retention, community service, and scholastic achievement of all Greek-letter organizations.

Oversees and manages the University's Greek Life standards and regulations, which includes policy development accountability, conduct matters, retention, community service, and scholastic achievement of all Greek-letter organizations. Evaluates and recommends proactive and efficient policies and procedures in line with best practices in the field.

Serves as the fiscal agent and provides oversight and financial accountability of programming and staffing budgets. Oversees the programming and security budgets allotted for the Office of Greek Life and Greek community.

Oversees the Redhawk Accreditation Program on both campuses, managing collection, review and reporting of semesterly assessment of chapter development including supporting, guiding, and advising chapters who fail to meet requirements and manage the grade reporting system to assist in informing educational training for Fraternity/Sorority/Social Fellowship organizations.

Meets weekly with the Greek Council President, biweekly with members of the Greek Council Leadership Team, and facilitates weekly Greek Council meetings.

Provides Academic Support through the Greek Life Academic Assistance Program (G.A.A.P.) for organizations chapter members at risk and below minimum academic standards.

Works in partnership with Director of Student Conduct, Title IX Coordinator, Bloomfield College partners, and external offices to provide programming around risk reduction, prevention and education and serve as a resource for conflict resolution and crisis management within the fraternity and sorority life community and stays informed about relevant laws, policies and best practices related to fraternity and sorority life; maintains records of reports of hazing violations/charges for adjudication with Student Conduct and for public reporting in accordance with Timothy J. Piazza Law for both campuses.

Provides on-call emergency support for fraternity and sorority community and fulfill duties as mandated reporter.

Creates and implements programming to assist chapters in fulfilling expectations within RHA and to fulfill University engagement commitments including Greek Organization Fair, Meets the Greeks, Annual UGC/NPHC Stroll for a Cause, UGC/NPHC Showcase, Panhellenic Recruitment, IFC Formal & Informal Recruitment, National Hazing Prevention Week Programming, Greek Life Love Week Service Week, Greek Week programming, New Member Presentations (Probates), Greek Awards Ceremony, Order of Omega,& service projects, and oversees and directly manages all logistics, reservations, and information for students attending relevant professional development conferences.

Prepares annual reports concerning the operations, stats and activities of Greek Life for national data and completes national organizational reports for member chapters as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED: 

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Higher Education/Student Affairs Administration/Counseling or related field.

A minimum of three (3) years of relevant administrative experience.

Professional work experience with Greek Life within an institution of higher education or professional association.

Ability to work effectively as a team member, and be able to deal effectively and courteously with supervisors, peers, governmental representatives, students, faculty and staff in a multi-ethnic/multi-cultural environment  .

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate and build a rapport with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community, excellent written and oral communication skills.

PREFERRED:

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.

General knowledge and insight of crisis management response and understanding of each organization’s national guidelines for crisis response.

Experience with conflict management and conduct investigations.
