About the Role

As the Home team expands our operation in helping readers find the best of The Times’ report on our surfaces, we are looking for a creative editor to help lead the curation of our visual experiences. In this new role, the assistant editor will use video- and photo-editing software, The Times’s proprietary tools and a strong design eye and will work with editors across the newsroom – including photo editors, designers and both the Social Visuals and Video teams – with a special focus on weekend planning. You will exercise a significant degree of news and visual judgment and editorial discretion, and feel comfortable being assigned to high-profile projects according to newsroom needs.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

Lead visual story promotion across the week, taking the news events calendar into account; collaborate with Home Discovery to make and log plans and set priorities in our planning tools

Create home page promotion visuals; advise on package presentations; model a mobile-first approach across the Home report and keep our global audience front of mind

Run point on breaking news presentations, coordinating with Home, Live, Photo and Graphics editors and advising on layouts and visual elements 

May write and edit short, compelling text in a manner that is consistent with Times style 

Guide desks around the newsroom in multiplatform storytelling

Collaborate with colleagues on Home Personalization and Product to test new features and build/maintain our tools 

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

You will report to Deputy Editor, Visuals 

Basic Qualifications:

5+ years of experience as a digital news editor

2+ years of experience with video production, including Adobe Premiere and After Effects

Experience considering the mobile user experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Impeccable visual judgment, sharp grasp of art direction and keen eye for use of illustration and setting an overall visual tone

Experience working in a fast-paced news environment

The schedule includes weekends, with occasional evening shifts.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $130,000.00 and $145,000.00.
