Assistant News Director
Purpose/reason for this Position: WREG has an immediate opening for Assistant News Director. We’re searching for a superlative journalist to lead a team of champions in Memphis -- one of the sauciest cities in America. If you are good enough to win this job, you will manage the day-to-day operations in an aggressive newsroom in a market that can only be described as news heaven. We are looking for a straightforward person who leads by example and is not afraid to show team members what it takes to succeed. We are looking for someone who is part coach, part counselor, part ramrod. You do not have to like Barbeque or The Blues, but a good sense of humor is a must. Core Job Functions: · Supervises, at the direction of the News Director, all producers, reporters, photographers, field producers and other personnel assigned. · Sets the tone of our content and is responsible for the visual elements and accuracy of all products on all broadcast and digital platforms. · Spearheads aggressive stance on breaking news. · Excels at strategic and tactical leadership. · Coaches and motivates reporters in meaningful and imaginative storytelling. · Demonstrates ability to grow our digital audience, while using digital tools to gather information. · Previous management experience in television news is a must. · Works closely with the Executive Producers, Chief Photographer and Assignments Manager in determining efficient scheduling of manpower for news coverage. · Recruits and evaluates on-air talent. · Performs other duties as assigned. · Shepherds targeted special reports, special projects and station initiatives that involve news coverage Minimum Knowledge Skills & Abilities: Experience in supervising professional news staff and in gathering and reporting news. Must be able to drive a vehicle. Ability to operate PC, word processor and editing equipment. Knowledge of what is required to produce seven hours of fast-paced newscasts daily. Command of the language. Must possess a valid State Driver's License (or be able to get one). Education Requirements: A degree is preferred and/or Five years WORK experience. Prior management experience preferred. Physical Requirements: Dexterity to operate PC, telephone, edit, equipment, etc. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, as required, of materials consisting of tapes, reference material, etc. Ability to communicate in office settings using telephone, radio, intercom, direct in person contact and other such means. Vision to view and produce newscasts.
