Assistant or Associate General Counsel

The University of Maine System (UMS) is seeking to hire a qualified individual as either an Assistant General Counsel or an Associate General Counsel depending on experience and qualifications to join a dynamic team in the Office of General Counsel. The position incumbent will be primarily responsible for providing advice and counsel regarding a broad range of matters involving University of Maine System faculty, staff, and student employees and labor unions, including, but not limited to student, faculty, and staff conduct; business transactions, campus operations; litigation defense; investigations; Title IX; diversity, equity and inclusion; and university policies and procedures. More generally, the position incumbent will exercise independent judgment to provide timely legal advice to UMS universities and personnel, expanding preventative legal education, and supporting UMS personnel with regard to addressing legal matters affecting higher education and System enterprise risk management as appropriate. Occasional drafting of pleadings and other court documents as well as occasional court appearances in a representative capacity for UMS as appropriate based on the experience of the successful candidate.
The work location is in Orono at the University of Maine campus. Successful candidates may have the opportunity to establish a hybrid work schedule.
Salary: The normal hiring range for an Assistant General Counsel is $75,000 to $100,000; for an Associate General Counsel is $95,000 to $120,000.

Qualifications:
Assistant General Counsel Qualifications
Required:
+ J.D. or LLB from an accredited law school required. License to practice in Maine or licensure within 1 year.
+ At least two years of post-JD legal experience.
Preferred:
+ Experience working with a public entity or higher education institution.
+ Experience in employment and/or labor law.
+ Experience in civil litigation.
Associate General Counsel Qualifications
Required:
+ J.D. or LLB from an accredited law school required. License to practice in Maine or licensure within 1 year.
+ At least five years of post-JD legal experience.
Preferred:
+ Experience working with a public entity or higher education institution.
+ Experience working in both law firm and in-house environments.
+ Experience in employment and/or labor law.
+ Experience in civil litigation.
