Job Description

DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Counseling at Montclair State University invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant or Associate Professor. Appointment includes teaching a range of graduate courses for prospective counselors and counselor educators with an emphasis on master’s-level practitioner preparation in a program with four concentrations: School Counseling (CACREP Accredited), Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CACREP Accredited), Addictions Counseling (CACREP Accredited), and Student Affairs in Higher Education. The department seeks a candidate who can teach across the master’s counseling curriculum and contribute to scholarly and leadership endeavors. The department seeks a candidate who is committed to preparing future counselors to effectively work with diverse individuals and communities, actively identify and address systemic barriers within the counseling field, and integrate culturally responsive practices into their teaching, supervision, and research.  The candidate may contribute to the CACREP-accredited doctoral program in Counseling, which centers equity and inclusion in Teaching/Andragogy, Research, Leadership, Supervision, and Counseling Practice. Faculty members are expected to be active scholars; teach, advise and mentor students; contribute to accreditation processes; participate in department, college, and university committees; participate in community engagement; and meet qualifications to teach in a CACREP-accredited program.

The College for Community Health (CCHL) at Montclair State University is dedicated to addressing pressing health inequities in New Jersey, the region, and beyond. The Counseling Department enrolls approximately 500 students in our master’s, post-Master’s/certificate, and doctoral programs, supported by five professional staff members and 13 full-time faculty. The master’s program holds CACREP accreditation in three of its concentrations (Addictions Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and School Counseling) and a 36-credit hour Student Affairs in Higher Education program. The doctoral program was the first CACREP-accredited counseling doctoral program in the New York City metropolitan area and is in its fifteenth year. The department is home to the Community Counseling Clinic, which provides services to the surrounding community and serves as a training site for several of our master’s-level students. With a mission rooted in anti-racism and resisting other forms of oppression, the department seeks to prepare counselors and counselor educators who will serve individuals, families, and communities with a justice-oriented approach.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

Earned doctorate in Counseling/Counselor Education or related field; if doctorate is not in Counseling/Counselor Education, experience as a full-time faculty member in a Counseling/Counselor Education program. Experience and/or licensure/certification as a practicing counselor. A well-defined research agenda, evidence of scholarly activities, and success in or potential for publications. Expertise in any counseling program concentrations (i.e., clinical mental health counseling, school counseling, addictions counseling, student affairs practice), with particular interest in addiction counseling. Demonstrated aptitude for or evidence of excellence in teaching, and demonstrated commitment to student and faculty diversity, equity, justice, and anti-oppression. Successful candidates must demonstrate capability of forging partnerships in local, neighboring communities, agencies, and institutions to deepen relationships therein.  

Preferred:

Experience using digital technologies to enhance teaching and learning, including teaching online.
