Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The UNC Charlotte Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ( CEE ) invites applications for two Tenure-Track Assistant Professor positions in the areas of Structural Engineering and Transportation Engineering with an anticipated start date of August 15, 2025.
All candidates will be considered, but those with expertise in the following areas are especially encouraged to apply: (1) Structural Engineering candidates with expertise in advanced materials and structures, natural hazards, sustainable and/or resilient design, advanced modeling and analysis techniques, energy infrastructure, or laboratory testing of structural components and systems; and (2) Transportation Engineering candidates with expertise in transportation planning for innovative vehicle technologies (such as electric or autonomous vehicles), system resilience, equity, freight, economics, energy and emissions, travel demand modeling, smart transportation infrastructure and control, and multiscale network modeling.
Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to research, teaching, and service. We seek individuals who can contribute to the department’s research initiatives and engage effectively with students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Candidates will be responsible for establishing a robust research program including securing external funding, publishing high-quality research in peer-reviewed journals, mentoring and advising students, including supervising doctoral dissertation research, developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in their respective area of structural or transportation engineering, and participating in departmental and university service activities.
Priority will be given to candidates with research interests that align with the department’s strategic areas of focus, a strong record of scholarly research and publications, a record of obtaining or the potential to obtain significant research funding, and experience with interdisciplinary research and industry partnerships. The ability to contribute to the University’s Research Areas of Focus and Distinction (such as Smart and Sustainable Cities, Transformational Energy, Advanced Manufacturing and Metrology, or Transportation and Advanced Mobility) is beneficial. College of Engineering has several research centers that offer excellent opportunities for collaboration. These centers include the Charlotte AIR institute, the BATT CAVE research center, and the Energy Production & Infrastructure Center ( EPIC ).
Minimum Experience / Education:
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
Preferred Education Skills and Experience:
Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in civil engineering or a related field. While not required, candidates with a Professional Engineering (PE) license, or willingness to obtain one, are encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to exhibit dedication to excellence in research, teaching, and professional service.
