General Statement The Department of Civil Engineering (CE) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in water resources engineering/fluid mechanics at the rank of Assistant Professor. The CE Department offers BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, and a BS degree in Construction Engineering Technology. The Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering (NACOE) offers a PhD degree in engineering with a Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Applied Mechanics option.

Approximately 700 students are enrolled in these programs supported by over 20 full time faculty. Research opportunities within the Department are enhanced by close association with the Subzero Research Laboratory (SRL) that focuses on ice/snow science, the Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE), the Western Transportation Institute (WTI), the Energy Research Institute (ERI) and the Montana Engineering Education Research Center (MEERC). The Department also provides hands-on experience for students through a variety of community-based projects.

Full-time tenure track appointments in the Department of Civil Engineering will have primary responsibilities in teaching, research, and service. Successful candidates will become an integral member of the Department, with duties to include teaching courses in the curriculum, contributing to program and curriculum development, developing a nationally recognized research program with extramural funding, and participating in professional/service activities. Duties and Responsibilities Contribute to CE undergraduate and graduate instruction, mentoring, and advising. Develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program. Produce scholarly works. Participate in professional/service/outreach activities. Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills PhD in Civil Engineering or related engineering field; Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills; and Evidence of scholarly achievements in the broad areas of water resources engineering/fluid mechanics Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Academic experience. Professional experience. Research interests that complement and expand current CE research programs. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across disciplines. Demonstrated ability to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the CE and NACOE programs. Professional registration or ability to become registered as a Professional Engineer within five years from date of employment. The Successful Candidate Will The Successful Candidate will be a dynamic teacher, researcher and communicator who has demonstrated: excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to teach and mentor students; ability to establish a research program that is complimentary to Departmental strengths in water resource engineering/fluid mechanics; and effective interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty, staff, and students. The Department The CE Department has 17 tenured or tenure-track faculty and offers ABET-accredited baccalaureate programs in both civil engineering and construction engineering technology, and graduate programs at the Master’s and PhD levels. The Department has approximately 660 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students. The Department is responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering mechanics for the College of Engineering (COE). Research opportunities within the Department are enhanced by ties with the Western Transportation Institute (WTI) and the Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE), as well the resources available in the Subzero Laboratory Facility (SRL), all of which are part of the College of Engineering (COE).

The College The College of Engineering comprises five academic departments – Chemical & Biological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, and is home to the Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE), Montana Engineering Education Research Center (MEERC), Western Transportation Institute (WTI), Montana Microfabrication Facility (MMF), Subzero Science and Engineering Research Facility, Montana Manufacturing Extension Center (MMEC), and Army and Air Force ROTC Units. The College offers a full suite of Master’s degrees; a Ph.D. in Engineering with options in the fields of Applied Mechanics, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering; and a Ph.D. in Computer Science.

With a wide array of research programs in progress, MSU engineering faculty and students have received an impressive number of awards. In the last three years alone, MSU engineering students have received two Rhodes Scholarships, a Marshall Fellowship, a Gates-Cambridge Fellowship, as well as four Goldwater scholarships.
