The successful candidate will have a proven track record of creative and research activities that engage artificial intelligence in a creative practice, and experience as an instructor in computer-assisted musical composition. Research specialties may include algorithmic composition, data sonification, musical neural networks, machine learning in the arts, immersive audio, or other related fields. This hire is a part of amajor, long-terminitiative (https://ai.ufl.edu/) at the university focused on artificial intelligence (in research, research infrastructure, and curriculum), with the goal of making UF a national leader in AI. The successful candidate will help answer some of the questions we are asking right now and discover the questions we should be exploring next: + How can the arts help AI function in the world in a different way? + How can a focus on process over product inform the future of AI? + How can the practice of critique inform AI or AI pedagogy? + How can improvisation, as a data set or theoretical frame, help shape AI’s possibilities in both capacity and applications? + How can the arts help destabilize techno-cultural power alignments, and help address and shape a more sustainable and inclusive human-AI interdependence? + What role should the arts play in AI across the curriculum at the University of Florida, and beyond? Responsibilities: + Develop, revise and deliver undergraduate and graduate curricula in electroacoustic music, technologically mediated composition, and artificial intelligence and the arts + Serve as director of the School of Music electronic music studios and computer lab + Serve on AI & the Arts Working Group to build a certificate program and help establish a center + Maintain an active national and international creative research profile in areas of specialization, consistent with the expectation of tenure and promotion + Active participation in our learning community, finding innovative ways to connect the arts to critical discourse in other disciplines + Participate in shared governance through service to the School, College and University Expected Salary: $85,000-$92,000 with a comprehensive and highly competitive leave and benefits package Minimum Requirements: The successful candidate will meet all of the following: + Terminal degree in Music Composition or closely related field (ABD considered) + Evidence of creative work and research activities that incorporate artificial intelligence into a creative practice + Skillsets in composition, artificial intelligence, programming, and the ability to effectively transmit that to students + Potential for achievement in the field at a national or international level, in alignment with the School of Music’s tenure and promotion criteria + Evidence of skill in designing and facilitating academic work that advances curiosity, inclusion, open intellectual discourse, and the well-being of all in an environment of complex diversities Preferred Qualifications: The successful candidate will meet some of the following: + Teaching experience of 3 or more years beyond graduate assistantship at the university level + Experience operating and maintaining equipment, with the ability to be a key player in the growth of technology and electronic music studios in the School of Music + Skills and experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, across art disciplines and beyond the arts into STEM fields + Grant writing experience + Evidence of a commitment to innovative and cross-disciplinary curricula + Demonstrated capacity for effective engagement in recruitment + Organizational, management and communication experience in a higher education setting Special Instructions to Applicants: Application Deadline:Review of applications will begin November 15thand continue until an applicant pool is established.
