General Statement The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at Montana State University invites applications for one full-time tenure track position in Mechanical Engineering (ME). Primary responsibilities are in teaching, research, and service/outreach. The successful candidate will become an integral part of the department. Duties will include teaching courses in ME, developing a nationally recognized, externally funded research program, working on curriculum development, and participating in professional/service activities. Duties and Responsibilities The new faculty member will be expected to contribute to excellence in both undergraduate and graduate teaching in the Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department, develop a nationally recognized, externally funded scholarly program in an appropriate focus area, produce scholarly works and collaborate with MSU’s research centers and regional partners. Other responsibilities include advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, participating in accreditation activities and committee assignments, and providing service to the University, State, and profession. Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills PhD in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field by start date. Record of quality peer-reviewed publications, other scholarly contributions, or demonstrated excellence in the profession. Excellent potential for developing a nationally recognized, externally funded scholarly program in an appropriate focus area. Excellent potential for effective undergraduate and graduate teaching in M&IE. Excellent potential to engage students and colleagues from all backgrounds within and outside the department. Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Experience in an academic environment, or experience in an industrial setting. Research program that complements and expands current M&IE Department research programs and directions. All outstanding candidates in the general areas of ME will be considered, but the department has special interest in research expertise in dynamical systems, robotics and/or controls, as well as thermal-fluid sciences and microfluidics. Demonstrated ability to work with, engage, and promote students and colleagues from all backgrounds within and outside the M&IE programs. The Successful Candidate Will Broad and deep understanding of the topics fundamental to either ME. Excellent written and oral communication skills. The Program The Department The M&IE Department offers ABET accredited BS degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, and Industrial & Management Systems Engineering. A degree in Financial Engineering is also available. Graduate offerings include MS degrees in Industrial & Management Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, and a Ph.D. degree in Engineering with options in Applied Mechanics, and Industrial and Management Systems Engineering. The M&IE Department is a vibrant department which strives for excellence in both education and research. The Department currently houses 6 NSF CAREER award winners, and our undergraduates consistently outperform the national average in the FE exam. The Department is strong in both traditional and emerging areas of each discipline, with substantial laboratory facilities supporting instructional and research missions. Available to M&IE Department faculty are collaborations with MSU’s Energy Research Institute, Center for Biofilm Engineering, Imaging and Chemical Analysis Laboratory, Magnetic Resonance Lab, Subzero Science and Engineering Research Facility, Montana Microfabrication Facility, Western Transportation Institute, Wind Application Center, Montana Manufacturing Extension Center, Thermal Biology Institute, and the Neuromuscular Biomechanics Laboratory. The College The College of Engineering comprises five academic departments – Chemical & Biological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical & Industrial Engineering,and is home to the Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE), Western Transportation Institute (WTI), Montana Microfabrication Facility (MMF), Subzero Science and Engineering Research Facility, Montana Manufacturing Extension Center (MMEC), and Army and Air Force ROTC Units. The College enrolls approximately 3,900 students with more than 200 studying in graduate degree programs. Doctoral degree programs include a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Engineering with options in the fields of Applied Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Industrial & Management Systems Engineering. With a wide array of research programs in progress, MSU engineering faculty and students have garnered an impressive number of awards.
