Position Summary:

The Department of Visual Arts & Art History seeks an Assistant Professor to teach and develop courses at undergraduate and graduate levels and perform creative research in Ceramics.  The Department envisions Ceramics as a catalyst to innovation and discovery.  Research specialization is open, but a focus in any of the following is of particular interest: craft/art/cultural theory, non-traditional or experimental approaches to ceramics, the intersection of ceramics with emergent technologies, materiality, social histories of clay, installation, performance, sustainable approaches for working with ceramic media, interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary practices, and social and community-based practices.

The standard teaching load is five courses per year.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach and have expertise in both wheel-based vessel and hand-building sculptural techniques and extensive knowledge of the history, theory and practices of the discipline, as well as the broader areas of art.  Demonstrated knowledge and experience in clay and glaze science, mold making/casting, atmospheric kiln firing, glaze and surface techniques at the undergraduate and graduate levels are essential, as well as familiarity with digital fabrication equipment, emergent technologies and ways in which these can be integrated into the curriculum.  The successful candidate will be expected to serve as a member of the graduate faculty with instructional assignments and participation in graduate MFA committees and to participate potentially in the Ph.D. Program in Comparative Studies track in Design, Aesthetics, and the Arts.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Responsible to the Department Chair and other administrators of the university.Responsible for teaching, research, service, and related administrative activities per annual assignment.Responsible for academic advising and related activities.May represent the university, college, or department on university and/or Statewide committees.

Minimum Qualifications:

MFA in Ceramics or closely related discipline required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Two to three years’ teaching experience at the university level (beyond that of a teaching assistant) together with strong studio management skills.

The selected candidate for this position is required to submit an official transcript sent directly from the institution for the Provost’s credential file prior to the first day of employment. Similarly, for degrees from outside the United States, the evaluation by an organization belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation (NACES), with an indication of the documents the evaluation was prepared from (official transcripts, diplomas, dissertation abstracts) is required for the Provost’s credential file prior to the first day of employment. Transcripts must be issued to Florida Atlantic University, not to the individual applicant.
