Job Summary: The School of Humanities and Global Studies at Ramapo College of New Jersey seeks to hire a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor to join its faculty, beginning fall semester 2025.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching expertise lies at the intersections of applied ethics and the philosophy of technology–specifically, the ethics of AI, data, and computers as well as science and medicine.  As large language modeling and generative AI rapidly affect the nature of work, data sets grow exponentially, and environmental and public health challenges become more complex, Ramapo College seeks a philosopher who can ready students, colleagues, and the public to navigate the ethical problems ahead.  This philosophy faculty member will create innovative scholarship, new courses, interdisciplinary alliances, and college-wide programs that connect ethics to artificial intelligence, large language models, other emerging data and computing technologies; to business; and to environment and public health. 

The successful candidate is expected to be engaged as scholar, teacher, advisor, and mentor and will teach 6 undergraduate courses during the academic year while fostering a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment that engages diverse learners.

Examples of Duties

Duties: 

Produce scholarship in applied ethics and the philosophy of technology; Attract external research funding and/or produce public-facing philosophy;Teach 3/3 undergraduate courses;The existing courses include data ethics, ethics, bioethics, ethics of self, history of social thought, introduction to logic, and world wisdom traditions.Graduate teaching (in-load) may be possible in the future;Develop new courses in emerging areas of applied ethics and the philosophy of technology–specifically, the ethics of AI, data, computers as well as science and medicine;Create and promote new and existing philosophy initiatives internally and externally;Advise students in the philosophy major, minor, and applied ethics certificate;Philosophy Club advisement;Mentor students in independent study projects;Do interdisciplinary outreach to other RCNJ programs; andAdditional committee assignments.

Qualifications

Qualifications:  

Ph.D. in philosophy by the time of appointment (Ph.D. in related fields considered);Robust scholarly agenda with previous publications in applied ethics and the philosophy of technology;Proven track record of teaching at all levels of undergraduates with a diverse student population (at least 6 semesters);Experience with innovative teaching methodologies, team teaching across diverse disciplines, and incorporating technology into teaching and learning.   Experience in digital humanities and public-facing philosophy is also desired.
