The University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) seeks applicants for a full-time*Assistant Professor and Director of Legal Affairs*(classified as a faculty position). The Assistant Professor and Director of Legal Affairs reports to the Dean of the School and works with University of Maryland Baltimore’s (UMB) University Counsel to handle legal matters occurring in the normal operation of a school of nursing with over 2,000 students and 25 academic and certificate programs. Its location in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C./Annapolis triangle maximizes opportunities for collaboration with government agencies, health care institutions, and life science industries. *Benefits Information* UMB offers a generous benefits package that includes 22 vacation days, 14 floating and holidays, 15 sick days; comprehensive health insurance and retirement options; and tuition remission for employees and their dependents at any of the University System of Maryland schools. *Job Responsibilities:* * Serve as a liaison to the Office of University Counsel related to the legal affairs of the school. * Support the education mission of the school through development and maintenance/management of student clinical placements and agreements with health care facilities and practices in Maryland and adjacent jurisdictions with attention to the educational standards and licensing requirements of the field of nursing. Ensure agreements comply with approved contract terms as set forth by the Office of the Attorney General and consult with Office of University Counsel to obtain legal advice as needed. * Develop and revise articulation agreements UMSON maintains with Maryland community colleges and universities. * Serve as UMSON liaison to UMB’s Office of Educational Support and Disability Services and to the Office of Academic Affairs for all student disability or religious accommodation requests. Coordinate between the campus Office of Disability Services, UMSON faculty and staff, and other appropriate offices to ensure accommodations are appropriately evaluated and implemented in accordance with university policies. Seek legal advice from the Office of University Counsel as needed. * Develop and revise the templates for the professional services agreements through which UMSON faculty are “leased’ to health care organizations to provide patient care while precepting students. Ensure agreements comply with university policies and approved contract terms as set forth by the Office of the Attorney General and consult with Office of University Counsel to obtain legal advice as needed. * Review pending legislation in the Maryland General Assembly during the January through April sessions, commenting on the legislation’s impact on the school and the nursing profession. * Monitor and respond to activities of the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON), attending monthly meetings and alerting the Dean and Associate Deans about issues raised which affect the school and its students. * Coordinate distribution of student liability insurance certificates to clinical facilities, collaborating with the staff of UMSON’s Associate Deans Office and UMB’s Office of Risk Management. Maintain the clinical facilities list with email addresses and respond to the State Treasurer’s Office supplemental questionnaire for the nurse practitioner and nurse anesthesia specialties. * Serve as UMSON’s point of contact to the Office of University Counsel and/or Office of Attorney General related to UMSON’s involvement in any legal proceedings (actual or potential) * Serve as UMSON’s point of contact to the UMB Office of Accountability and Compliance on student-related matters and helping to facilitate compliance needs. * Educate faculty and staff on policies related to intellectual property, specifically ownership and use of the school’s course materials by faculty and others in external educational endeavors and on policies related to FERPA or other confidentiality laws. Student Handbook – draft and / or review annual updates and interpret student policies throughout the year. Update the Technical Standards for Admission, Progression and Graduation as needed. * Educate faculty on curricular matters impacting fairness and due process, including fairness in student evaluations (evaluation mechanisms have a rational basis in course objectives and are given appropriate weight in the student's final grade) and handling absences for tests and clinicals due for various reasons. * Support the review and recognition of preceptors to whom the school’s students are assigned for practicum education through the Faculty Associate and volunteer Adjunct Faculty appointment and renewal processes. * Fulfill faculty teaching responsibilities in for-credit and professional education programs. * Serve on UMB administrative committees or workgroups on behalf of UMSON on matters related to student health, student accommodations, or the evolving needs of student clinical placements. *Education: * Baccalaureate in Nursing or master’s degree in nursing Preferred Education: Juris Doctorate from an ABA approved law school *Experience:** * Minimum two (2) years of experience in nursing working in a health care facility Preferred Experience: At least one (1) year in nursing education preferred. Will consider applicants,with health law experience. *Licensure:** * Licensure as a Registered Nurse in a US state, territory, or the District of Columbia Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Maryland or a Compact State preferred. This is a School of Nursing faculty, non-tenure track, 12-month appointment. School of Nursing faculty appointments are long-term, renewable contracts and are eligible for promotion.
