INTRODUCTION/POSITION: TheDepartment of Philosophy (https://philosophy.udel.edu/) in the College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for the position of Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Philosophy. Areas of Specialization: Epistemology or philosophy of mind. Areas of Competence: Open, but the ideal candidate would have teaching competence in one or more of the following areas: logic, the political and ethical implications of AI, or topics at the intersection of social/political philosophy and mind/epistemology/language (e.g., epistemic injustice, free speech, propaganda, social ontology).
QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: We seek an exceptional candidate whose research focuses on epistemology or philosophy of mind. The successful candidate will be a dedicated teacher and have an existing or emerging record of strong scholarship, as well as a robust forward-looking research agenda. The typical teaching load is five courses per year. In addition to standard introductory-level service teaching, the successful candidate will regularly teach philosophy of mind and/or theory of knowledge for philosophy and cognitive science students. The department has teaching needs in logic and is looking to expand its course offerings on the ethical implications of AI, as well as topics at the intersection of social/political philosophy and mind/epistemology/language. The ideal candidate would be able to contribute towards one or more of these goals. Though not required, an interest in public philosophy would also be an asset. Candidates should have completed their Ph.D. by September 1, 2025.
DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY AT UD: TheDepartment of Philosophy (https://philosophy.udel.edu/) at the University of Delaware is within the College Arts and Sciences. We are an undergraduate-only department that prizes excellence in both teaching and research. Our faculty teach courses across all major areas of analytic philosophy and have research strengths in ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, social and political philosophy, philosophy of law, philosophy of religion, philosophy of science, early modern, non-Western, and medieval philosophy. The department offers a major in philosophy with special tracks for honors, philosophy and religion, and philosophy and the law. It also offers an ethics certificate as well as a minor in philosophy and three interdisciplinary minors in religious studies, medical humanities, and science, technology, and philosophy. The department maintains an active colloquium calendar and sponsors semi-annual public debates and lectures. Philosophy faculty members direct the Center for Science, Ethics, and Public Policy, a research center that integrates ethics and public policy inquiry with scientific research. The department also maintains an active presence in both the regional and national philosophical community. It participates in the Greater Philadelphia Philosophy Consortium, a regional network of philosophy departments that sponsors a range of public philosophy events, including an annual undergraduate conference. Since 1975, the national office of the American Philosophical Association has been located at the University of Delaware.
