Assistant Project Scientist - Gregory Donaldson Lab at UCLA

UCLA’s Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics is seeking to fill a full-time Assistant Project Scientist position. The Assistant Project Scientist candidate will perform independent research to develop new methods for in vivo microbiome transcriptomics. The Assistant Project Scientist position is a 12-month non-Senate position.

Specific responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

Lead the end-to-end technical development, validation, and deployment of new methods for measuring transcriptomes of host-associated bacteria and bacterial communities. Maintain mouse colonies, tissue culture cell lines, and entero-organoids to use as models of host-associated bacteria or bacterial communities. Develop and optimize protocols for RNA preparation from different samples and tissues. Cultivate and genetically manipulate aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Teach graduate students and other members of the lab how to work with model systems related to host-microbe interactions, including: gnotobiotic mice, entero-organoids, and tissue-cultured monolayers. Assist with preparation of grant proposals. Preparation of manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ph.D. (or equivalent) in microbiology or immunology
• >5 years mouse handling (gnotobiotics, gavage, injection, husbandry)
• Molecular biology expertise (RNA preparation from tissues, transcriptomics)
• Microbiology experience (anaerobic culture)
• Tissue culture experience (specifically 3-dimensional organoid culture)
